A symbol of authority armed with his bible and faith, Sergeant Howie is sent to a remote Scottish Island to investigate the disappearance of a young girl. Not a gorefest this one - but still quite a disturbing story that will give you that 'empty' feeling.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Invasion Of The Body Snatchers

Need I say the all of the originals listed here are better than the re-makes? A sci-fi horror, not too much gore but has the right feel and quality about it to grip you to your seat.

Dawn Of The Dead

After undead syndrome starts taking over USA, some clever people (and two cops) decide to take a helicopter and fly north where they stumble across a huge shopping Mall with everything you could possibly need. Romero's second of the undead trilogy and for me its the best zombie film ever made. It's not so scary this one so don't wait to be shocked, nonetheless it's highly entertaining and thought provoking plus it sticks to the rules of the undead and has a cold zombified synthesized soundtrack. I could go on... give it a go!

Cannibal Holocaust

A film that does not feature aliens, the paranormal or psychopaths this time. Was originally banned partly because people thought the events had actually taken place. This is the most shocking film in the list and sets a benchmark that has rarely been surpassed. It goes that the footage a lost film crew had made documenting indigenous people from a South American jungle is retrieved by a rescue party except they are not prepared for conclusion of the documentary, and neitrher will you be.
  • Cannibal Holocaust on DVD (1979)
Starring: Robert Kerman,  Francesca Ciardi,  Luca Barbareschi
    Director: Ruggero Deodato

Banned under the 1984 Video Recordings Act, Cannibal Holocaust has become a notorious film. Only released for Britain in 2001, it was passed with a number of cuts. The Shining

If you don't know this one, then where on earth have you been! A writer charged with looking after a huge isolated snowlocked haunted hotel goes absolutely nuts. The child who plays the Danny character son of the nutcase is disturbingly believable.

Starring: Jack Nicholson,  Shelley Duvall,  Danny Lloyd
    Director: Stanley Kubrick

The Burning

  • The Burning on DVD (1981)
Starring: Holly Hunter,  Brian Matthews,  Leah Ayers

FRIDAY THE 13th spawned an entire generation of imitators, but few were quite as accomplished as Tony Maylam's THE BURNING.
