King Kong - The Eighth Wonder Of The World

The film the kick started my love of movies. Please oh please do not mistake for the inferior CGI laden vanity project that is the 2005 remake!

Rio Bravo

Howard Hawks is one of the few who could master every genre he directed (though Ang Lee is giving him a run for his money!). This is his finest moment. Much copied but never equaled.

Star Wars Trilogy

The Empire Strikes Back. My life wasnt the same after 1980...

Escape From New York

Sneaked into this movie on a dare whilst underage with some mates in 1981. Didnt know much about it but soon fell in love with this and all the early Carpenter movies. In 1981 the kids wanted to be Indy but the youths wanted to be Snake...

Another John Carpenter cult classic, 'Escape From New York' was one of the best entries in the once popular post-apocalyptic genre which included 'Road Warrior' and 'The Terminator'. The Good, The Bad And The Ugly

A true epic masterpiece. And oh so quotable.

Seven Samurai

Amazing action scenes apart, its in the intimate dialogue free scenes of personal sacrifice or modesty that we find some of cinemas finest heroism

Evil Dead 2

Was dragged to see this by a mate for its one night only showing in our local cinema 1987. Had zero expectation as I hated Evil Dead 1. One of the greatest cinematic suprises of my life as a new movie hero was born. In a word - Groovy.

The Wild Bunch

Even the oldest and baddest of us can find redemption. The scene where they pass the whisky bottle is still one of my favourites ever.
  • The Wild Bunch on DVD (1969)
Starring: William Holden,  Robert Ryan,  Ernest Borgnine
    Director: Sam Peckinpah
    Certificate: Certificate: 18
As a counterpoint to the heroic horde of THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, the ageing gunmen of Sam Peckinpah's masterpiece break the very laws of honour which bind them in this bloody and meditative tale of the American West--widely considered to be the self-conscious nail in the coffin of the genre. William ..read more »

The Last Of The Mohicans

The first Michael Mann movie I saw at the cinema, so wasnt ready for this tour de force of perfect direction. Now await every new Mann movie with baited breath. Brilliant in so many ways.

L.A. Confidential

Quite frankly about as near to a perfect film as possible. Great plot, casting, acting, direction, script, design, and soundtrack. They do make 'em like they used to!
  • L.A. Confidential on DVD (1997)
Starring: Kevin Spacey,  Russell Crowe,  Kim Basinger

Director Curtis Hanson captures the duality of 1950s Los Angeles in this striking film noir adaptation of James Ellroy's novel. The City of Angels might be sunny, inviting, and glamorous to the rest of the world, but it's also filled with corrupt cops, elegant hookers, murder cover-ups, and ..read more »
