The Godfather

the definitive... because it stands in its own right as a true masterpiece but also as part of a body of work that is this great trilogy.. so realistic. so authentic.. Mario Puzo must have drawn heavily from the history of the Black Hand and the lives of Masseria, Maranzano, Luciano, Siegel, Lansky, Bonanno, Genovese, Gambino, Anastasia, Giancana, Trifficante Jr. , Dellacroce, Castellano, Gotti... et al.

The Godfather Part 2

also excellent but oft overlooked sequel possibly because there is just so much going on in this story

The Godfather Part 3

one and two are waaay better but you gotta love heart on his sleeve Andy Garcia in 3...

Scarface

say 'ello to <sigh>... nah I'm not gonna do it... annoyingly the most copied impression.... MANNGGG

American Gangster

a lot of mixed reviews about this one... haven't seen it yet so perhaps its a generational thing. ...but before you check out wealthy dope peddler Frank Lucas, you may want to catch 'Hoodlum' (page 3 of this list) about American Gangster based in Harlem, Ellsworth Raymond "Bumpy" Johnson ... Nicky Barnes, Frank's contemporary is said to have inspired the Nino Brown character in 'New Jack City' (also on this list)... Google 'The Return of Superfly' a New York Mag article about Frank

Infernal Affairs

watch this trilogy (II & III also on this list) before 'The Departed'

Rise of the Footsoldier

hardcore version of same events (Rettendon Range Rover Murders) that inspired 'Essex Boys' also on this list .... apparently not true to life... check out http://www.bernardomahoney.com/books/essexb.shtml and Bernard O'Mahoney's book 'Bonded by Blood' .....also lurking the BOM forum should yield evidence of factual inaccuracies in the film but hey, it never purported to be a docudrama and they sure covered themselves by using the usual disclaimer spiel... Craig Fairbrass' Pat is great.. pity that Ricci hasn't shaken off the laddish swagger that we saw in '28 Days Later' .

City Of God

One of the very best!..there really are gangs of feral kids even worse off than those in the favelas ...... on the streets and rubbish dumps .....

Amores Perros

I want to take that rottie to Crufts next year! good story nicely told with QT style non-linear jumps ala Pulp Fiction also on this list...

Romanzo Criminale

A bunch of mates quickly rise to the top unhindered by codes of honour or respect
