Best Films of the Last Ten Years, Part One: 1998 (18 titles)
I'm starting my series of the top films released in the last ten years with a list of the films that I consider to be the best released in the U.K. in 1998.
Coen Brothers at their best, in this offbeat comedy noir that they always do so well. A must watch.

(1997) Starring:Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Julianne Moore Director:Joel Coen Certificate:
When unemployed Dude is attacked in his apartment by two thugs who mistakenly think he is millionaire Jeff Lebowski, he decides to pay a visit to his namesake in the hope of receiving compensation.
This is one of the coolest films ever. A Steven Soderbergh adaptation of an Elmore Lenord novel bought George Clooney his first proper role and features the only decent acting performance from J-Lo.
Out Of Sight
on DVD
(1998) Starring:George Clooney, Jennifer Lopez, Dennis Farina Director:Steven Soderbergh Certificate:
Based on Elmore Leonard's famous crime novel, OUT OF SIGHT finds director Steven Soderbergh back in Hollywood after a brief return to the independent world with SCHIZOPOLIS and GRAY'S ANATOMY. A funny, hip, and vibrant action-drama, OUT OF SIGHT tells the story of the unlikely relationship that ..read more »
Its a travesty that this didn't win Best Picture at The Oscars. The opening scene on the beach says it all and Tom Hanks is at his best as are the rest of the ensemble.
Saving Private Ryan
on DVD
(1998) Starring:Tom Hanks, Edward Burns, Tom Sizemore Director:Steven Spielberg Certificate:
Director Steven Spielberg's World War II tour de force chronicles the journey of a GI squad on a dangerous mission behind enemy lines. Led by Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks), the unit is under orders to track down a soldier, Private Ryan (Matt Damon), so he might return home to his mother in ..read more »
This political satire is highly recommended as it was of John Travolta's most overlooked performances as a Clinton-esque senator. He is ably supported by British actor Adrian Lester and the scene-stealing Kathy Bates.
Primary Colors
on DVD
(1998) Starring:John Travolta, Emma Thompson, Billy Bob Thornton Director:Mike Nichols Certificate:
John Travolta leads an all-star cast (including Oscar winners Emma Thompson, Kathy Bates and Billy Bob Thornton) on a wild race to the presidency in this savagely funny comedy. Funny, gripping and utterly compelling. I loved all of this film from its unique style down to its quirky performances especially from comeback kid Robin Williams.
Good Will Hunting

One of only a few of the modern British gangster films that didn't suck. The quick paced dialogue combined with the awesome soundtrack and the realisitc performances made us sit up and pay attention at this new style of film.
Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels
on DVD
(1998) Starring:Vinnie Jones, Dexter Fletcher, Nick Moran Director:Guy Ritchie Certificate:
A brutally comic tale about a group of London friends who find themselves deep in debt to an East End tough, LOCK, STOCK AND TWO SMOKING BARRELS is quick-paced, stylized, and highly entertaining. In his debut feature film, director-writer Guy Ritchie weaves a tangled web of shady, blithely ..read more »
Controversially possibly my favoruite Tarrantino film, mainly because Tarrantino didn't write the script but adapted it. The three alternate scens of the one event is a great plot device. Pam Grier is superb in the title role as is Robert Forster and its nice to see Robert De Niro not playing Robert De Niro for once.
Jackie Brown
on DVD
(1997) Starring:Pam Grier, Samuel L. Jackson, Robert De Niro Director:Quentin Tarantino Certificate:
Quentin Tarantino returns to the crime genre once again with this adaptation of Elmore Leonard's RUM PUNCH. Transplanting Leonard's crime story from Miami to Tarantino's city of choice, Los Angeles, JACKIE BROWN cruises along smoothly, much like the film's 1970s soul soundtrack. The film follows ..read more »
Before there was American Beauty there was this satire on family life. I like the way it is stylised and shot so you believe it is the 1970s. Kevin Kiline and Sigourney Weaver are outstanding and this is the film where Christina Ricci grew up.
The Ice Storm
on DVD
(1997) Starring:Kevin Kline, Sigourney Weaver, Joan Allen Director:Ang Lee Certificate:
It is Thanksgiving 1973, and the Carvers and the Hoods are two prototypical suburban families seemingly living the good life in New Canaan, Connecticut. Behind their New Age philosophies and polyester fashions, however, lies deep discontent. One husband carries on an unsatisfying affair with the ..read more »
A period piece with seems unusually modern. All the set pieces are done well and of course Cate Blanchett is on form.
