Eraserhead

Filmed in black and white, this strange and disturbing film is a surreal look at the wonders and horrors of fatherhood. A truely original, and bizarre feature film debut from Mr. Lynch. The quirky actor Jack Nance became a Lynch regular, and appears in most of his films. Best dvd release to get? - The remastered version (available in the U.K), which has the film in its intended 1.78:1 aspect ratio and a lengthy documentary as well.

Director David Lynch's feature-film debut is a masterpiece of the macabre and grotesque. The Elephant Man

A beautifully made film, and one of Lynch's more linear films. Brilliant performances from Anthony Hopkins, and under a ton of superb make up, John Hurt as John Merrick (his real name was actually Joseph). The black and white cinematography is perhaps some of the best i've ever seen, and really adds to the victorian atmosphere. Best dvd release to get? - The U.S region 1 dvd contains an exclusive 30 minute documentary, however the current U.K dvd has bonus material not on the U.S one. The choice is yours.

Dune

Possibly Lynch's weakest film. This sci-fi flop features some surreal dream like sequences, and spectacular sets. Some of the visual effects may seem dated now, but its hard not be in awe at the scale and spectacle of the film. Technically its masterpiece, but the narrative is all over the place (the story is very complex), and the film feels a little unfinished. This is due to the fact Lynch was forced by the studio to cut the film down to just over 2 hours. Best dvd release to get? - The U.S region 1 'extended edtion', has the film in its 2.35:1 aspect ratio (16:9 enhanced), and a selection of making featurettes and also contains the awful extended T.V version (Lynch had his name removed from the credits, and had nothing to do with it). The out of print U.K special edition (available on Ebay or Amazon) has a 40 minute making of not on the U.S dvd.

    Director: David Lynch

    Watch now: £2.49
David Lynch's baroque rendering of Frank Herbert's detailed, complex, and deliberately paced epic science-fiction novel is a muddled but visually stunning affair. It's 10991, and the desert planet Dune has been taken over by the Harkonnens, oppressive conquerors who desire the precious spice that ..read more »

Blue Velvet

One of Lynch's best films (in my opinion). Very dark, disturbing, and the humour has sharp black edge to it. Dennis Hopper gives a career best, as the disturbed and brutal Frank. Perhaps not for the faint hearted. Best dvd release to get? - The special edition released by MGM. Has excellent picture quality and some good extras. Avoid any cheap dvd releases (theres loads of them), as they tend to have very poor picture quality, and are usually a cropped pan and scan version.

Wild At Heart

This David Lynch film features numerous references to 'The Wizard of OZ', violence, sex, dark humour and a memorable performance from Willem Dafoe. The film can be extremely slow paced at times, so don't bother if you want loads of action. Not Lynch's best, but well worth alook if you like his films. Look out for cameos from Lynch regulars like Sherilyn Fenn (Audrey in Twin Peaks), Sheryl Lee (Laura Palmer), and Freddie Jones (Bytes in The Elephant Man). Best dvd release to get? - The current special edition from MGM is easily the best one to get. Excellent picture, and some good supplements too.

Twin Peaks - Series 1

One of the most influential t.v shows ever made (see 'X-files', 'Lost', 'Northern Exposure' etc..). This superb series, is surreal, funny, sexy and quite dark. This will keep you addicted. Best dvd release to get? -The U.K boxset includes the original U.S pilot and is the one to get. Avoid the U.S series 1 boxset, as it does not contain the pilot. A 'Gold' boxset featuring Series 1 and 2 and both the original U.S pilot and the international VHS release version (features a tagged on definate ending) is also available via import from the U.S or Australia.

Twin Peaks - Series 2

Sadly the second series of this cult t.v series is not available yet in the U.K, which is a shame because its a brilliant series, and highly recommended. Ideal for some early Nineties nostalgia. Best dvd release to get? - The U.S region 1 boxset has the whole of series 2. Other regions such as Europe and Australia the series is spread over 2 boxsets. A 'Gold' boxset s also available from the U.S and Australia with Series 1 and 2 and 2 versions of the pilot.

Twin Peaks - Fire Walk With Me

A prequel to the t.v show - gives more questions than answers. This film loses the humour of the series, but the final days of the doomed teenager Laura Palmer is disturbing, and brilliantly bizarre. The sequence in the night club, is one of Lynch's finest, and likewise for Laura Palmer's final moments. If you have never seen 'Twin Peaks', I strongly recommend you watch the whole of the T.V series before you watch the film, as the film gives away Laura Palmer's killer. Best dvd release to get? - The U.S region 1 dvd has excellent picture quality and a documentary too.

Lost Highway

This film is a major brain fryer. All the Lynch trademarks are here - dark humour, violence, intense sex scenes, and disturbing characters. The scene in which actor Robert Blake first appears at party is really creepy. This was Lynch regular Jack Nance's last film before his death. David Lynch's films will never be the same without him. Best dvd release to get? - The out of print U.K special edition is available from Ebay or Amazon, but is quite exspensive. Th Austrailian region 4 special edition is still available and a bit cheaper. A documentary is available on dvd in the U.S (Region 0) called 'Pretty as a picture: The art of David Lynch' and features behind the scenes footage of 'Lost Highway'.

The Straight Story

Many Lynch fans (including myself) were shocked when this film was first released. no swearing, no violence, or sex, and no weird bits - just a heartwarming, and beautifully made film (which is based on a true story). Actor Richard Farnsworth was suffering from bone cancer while making this film, he was also nominated for the best actor oscar (which he should have won, as it is a wonderful performance). Sadly Farnsworth found the pain unbearable and took his own life in 2000. Best dvd release to get? - Any release in any region.
