Beautiful, stunning and very sophisticated, Rahxephon is about Ayato Kamina finding out the truth of his secluded world and becoming the pilot of divine mecha Xephon to save humanity, but at its true heart it is a love story of childhood sweethearts seperated by time and space; yet never willing to let go of eachother. The series and movie are needed to understand the full story, and repeated viewings are recommended as you'll understand some things a little better each time around. Featuring probably the most enduring and lovable anime couple of all time, gorgeous visuals from Stduio Bones and a lovely soundtrack from world renowned composer Yoko Kanno this is my second favourite anime of all time second only to AIR. I love this show to bits.

Bored and unstable high school kid Light Yagami finds himself in possession of an instrument of mass destruction-a 'death note'-dropped by a shinigami. Upon deciding to wipe out all of the world's criminals to create a utopia he finds himself in a deadly cat and mouse game with eccentric detective L, who isn't too keen on Light's ideals. Tense, shocking and masterfully structured Death Note wills have its hooks in you from beginning to end. This is probably-on every level-the best anime I have ever seen.

From a time when Pokemon was at the peak of its warmth and beauty comes this little gem of a movie. The visuals are superb for its time and the story is very meaningful; I'm 19 years old and I still find this hugely entertaining. A true classic.

A story of sin and repentance as the Elric brothers try to find the legendary Philosopher's stone and recover their true bodies, which they lost in a horrific accident after the death or their mother. FMA is moving, sweet, action packed and often as hilarious as it is heart wrenching. Shouldn't be missed. Also check out the movie!

The classic of all classics, Cowboy Bebop stands the test of time and will be just as enjoyable in 50 years as it is now. It just drips coolness and every episode is flawlessly enjoyable, from the very beginning to the inevitable and tragic end. The jazzy score from the queen of composers Yoko Kanno just makes it perfect.

Butt-kicking, hip-hopping, hilarious fun from the director of Cowboy Bebop. The animation is stunning and the quick witted script never fails to amuse; Samurai Champloo is always great fun to watch and re-watch as a wild warrior, a quiet ronin and a ditzy waitress form an unlikely alliance to journey to 'the samurai who smells of sunflowers'. Just as much fun as Bebop, but without that 'classic' feel to it.

Dark, edgy gothic thriller as two orphans are torn apart in a post-apocalpytic world. Siblings Kyoko and Tatsuya are caught between the warring factions of psychic Orga children led by the mysterious Countess, and the black-clad creatures Gilgamesh who work for the terrorist Enkidu. The black and white of evil because shades of grey in this enthralling anime which I have to admit stands apart from most other titles...its just got that special quality about it that makes you think 'wow, I want that in my collection'.

What are the Proxies? The sheer quality of the animation, music and plot puts this among the best anime I have ever seen; it is very easily comparable to Rahxephon and Gilgamesh. Dark, beautiful and utterly gripping, Ergo Proxy is sophisticated and intelligent without being pretentious or confusing. The episodes range from being random and funny to sweet and tender without ever losing its dark undertones. I can't honestly explain fully why, but this in my top ten favourite anime of all time. Highly recommended.

Makoto Shinkai's breakout masterpiece; short but very very sweet Hoshi No Koe is the heartbreaking tale of two high school sweethearts who are gradually seperated through time and space, yet continue desperately to stay in contact. This makes me cry every time I watch it.

Longe than its predecessor, and with a little more story this took me until the second viewing for its depth and beauty to sink in. A promise between 3 childhood friends becomes impossible when the girl Sayuri slips into a deep coma. Her very existence in the world now tied to other dimensions and mysterious forces, her childhood friends-now years older-come together again to save her and fulfil their promise of that summer's day. With this melancholy yet hopefuly little treasure Shinkai effectively cements himself as 'the next Miyazaki'.
