Tesco strengthens ties with Video Island
Tesco.com extends agreement for a further two years
London, 24 October 2005. Video Island, Europe's leading online DVD rental service and operator of ScreenSelect.co.uk, has extended its partnership with Tesco.com, for a period of at least two more years. The move brings the two partners closer together, with plans to work on a range of new home entertainment and digital content services for members.
Tesco.com was the first big retail brand to break into the online DVD rental market when it launched its service back in March 2004, powered by Video Island. It originally offered over 15,000 DVD titles to rent, including all the latest releases, 10 times the selection of a video rental shop. It now offers over 30,000 titles.
Tesco.com's DVD rental service enables subscribers to rent an unlimited amount of DVDs for a flat-rate monthly fee, with packages starting from as little as £7.97 per month.
The extended partnership will see Tesco.com and Video Island working together on new initiatives including digital downloading of filmed entertainment content along with other home entertainment offerings.
John Paul O'Reilly, Director of Tesco.com said: "We were one of the first companies to team up with Video Island in the online DVD rental arena, and are delighted to be extending our relationship with them. The business is an integral part of our non-food offering. Since teaming up with Video Island in March last year, we have watched them dominate one of the most exciting new sectors in Europe today. Our customers love the service and we look forward to extending our home entertainment services with Video Island in the coming years."
Simon Calver, CEO of Video Island commented, "We are delighted to be extending our relationship with Tesco.com. This is an exciting time in our development and we look forward to new opportunities to work together on further home entertainment offerings. Tesco.com has helped significantly bring online DVD rental services to the UK market and together we are providing people with access to many films, documentaries, children's titles and TV series. The online DVD rental service is a phenomenon that is really changing the way people enjoy film and we will continue to ensure Tesco.com customers receive the best service and products going forward."
Spending on DVD rental in Europe reached EUR 2.2bn in 2004, more than four times the spending on VHS.
