Films that make you go vroooom!

Hair-raising chases, gadgets you could only dream of and underwater driving - cars can undoubtedly play a crucial role in the films of today. As cars dominate the big screen this summer in remakes of classics such as Dukes of Hazzard and Herbie, LOVEFiLM.com, the UK's leading online DVD rental service, polled over 5,000 of its members to determine what cars they deemed to be the most iconic in film.

LOVEFiLM.com today reveals the top 10 movie motors of all time. The DVDs below, chosen from LOVEFiLM's catalogue of over 35,000 titles, were voted the movies that contained the most memorable and jaw dropping cars in the history of film.

1. The Spy Who Loved Me: LOTUS ESPRIT As if a Lotus Esprit isn't impressive enough, James Bond goes one step further and drives his straight into the sea, exceeding all expectations with some spectacular underwater driving.
2. Back to the Future: 1981 DELOREAN This 1981 DeLorean was customised by The Doc to travel back in time to 1955 to save the future of Marty McFly.
3. Starsky & Hutch: 1976 FORD GRAN TORINO 460-V8 The pride and joy of Starsky, which helped both Starsky and Hutch bust criminals. The last thing Starsky will do is let someone else drive his beloved Ford Torino - maybe he should've let Hutch drive in the final scenes when he jumps his car off the dock, over the boat he meant to land on and straight into the sea!
4. Herbie: The Love Bug: VW BEETLE In this Disney classic, a VW Beetle (the car with a mind of its own) saves the day for a fading racing driver and leads him to victory and romance.
5. Batman: BATMOBILE - 'BARRIS KUSTOMS' CUSTOM CARS Voice activated, its own protective shield and packed full of gadgets - you'd be lying if you said you'd never dreamt of driving the Batmobile!
6. Bullit: 1968 FORD MUSTANG 390 GT Steve McQueen drives this Ford Mustang through the streets of San Francisco in one of the most famous and iconic car chases ever filmed.
7. Blues Brothers: DODGE MONACO 440 This Ex-police car is a key attribute for Jake and Elwood on their mission from God to "get the band back together" to raise money for the orphanage where they grew up. Not only does it jump them over a lifting bridge half-opened but it helped them escape from one of the most-renowned police chases in movie history.
8. Grease: 49 MERCURY CUSTOM This car is automatic, systematic, hydromatic…why it's Grease Lightning! The T-Birds take time out from customising their 49 Mercury to dream of the end result and more importantly, sing Grease Lightning.
9. Ghostbusters: 1959 CADILLAC AMBULANCE "Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters!" How could Venkman, Spengler and Stantz have answered these calls and saved the world from ghosts without their trusty 1959 Cadillac Ambulance?
10. Thelma & Louise: 1975-77 AMC PACERS Thelma & Louise put this car through its "pacers" by becoming two of America's most wanted fugitives. In their last bid for freedom they deicide to throw themselves off the side of the Grand Canyon and because their love for this car was so strong...they took it with them!
