Why: To stave off deportation back to Canada, managing editor Bullock orders her assistant (Reynolds) to marry her. This cookie cutter rom-com was well liked in the States and propelled Bullock back to the top of the box office charts.

Who: Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler
Why: Another female boss, this time a producer on a TV morning show, battles it out with a sexist - but popular - presenter (Butler). From the writers of Legally Blonde and The House Bunny, and the director of Monster-in-Law.

I LOVE YOU BETH COOPER

When: 21st August
Who: Hayden Panettiere and Paul Rust
Why: Bone fide nerd Rust hijacks high school graduation to declare his love to the most popular girl in school. He’s shocked when she shows up on his doorstep that evening to give him the night of his life. Home Alone and Harry Potter director Chris Columbus is back doing his thing.

FUNNY PEOPLE

When: 28th August
Who: Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen
Why: Adam’s a successful but isolated comedian with a potential terminal disease; Seth’s the up-and-coming comic who signs on as his assistant. Judd Apatow writes and directs a project with seriously schmaltzy pitfalls, with a supporting cast including Leslie Mann, Eric Bana, Jonah Hill, Jason Schwartzman and RZA.

Who: Jessie Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart
Why: College grad James (Eisenberg, from The Squid And The Whale) gets a summer job at an amusement park and falls in love with the girl from Twilight. A critics fave in the US from the director of Superbad, Greg Mottola.

AWAY WE GO

Who: Maya Rudolph and John Krasinski
Why: Pregnant and footloose, Burt and Verona visit friends and relatives across the country in search of the perfect home. This quirky, indie-style comedy is a change of pace from Revolutionary Road director Sam Mendes. Novelist Dave Eggars’ first screenplay.
