Chicken Little

Rated - 1.5 stars

Chicken Little: Zach Braff

Disney's latest attempt to duplicate Pixar's witty and whizzy digital animated marvels probably convinced the board that they were better off biting the bullet and buying up Pixar outright.

Based on the much loved but very short children's story about the chick who believes the sky is falling down, Chicken Little soups up the material with the genius notion of aliens invading the earth - see the sky really is falling down, if only everyone (or at least his embarrassed dad) would believe it.

The movie tries hard to please. It's loaded with zippy action sequences and quirky comic relief - the voice cast includes such cut-ups as Zach Braff (Garden State), Pretty Woman director Garry Marshall, Steve Zahn, Joan Cusack, Wallace Shawn, Amy Sedaris, Harry Shearer, Fred Willard, Catherine O'Hara, even TV Batman Adam West. None of which dispels the smell of desperation in the air - this chicken just doesn't fly.

Rated - 2 starsOthers are better

If you want the kids to see a funny film then there are others better than this. The animation is great, the effects are very good, there is even a story (weak as it is), but it lacks humour. It is funny in places but just not funny enough and not funny often enough. We took my 6 year old and eight year old. The six year old was so bored that my wife took him out after 30mins. I had the pleasure of sitting through the rest of the film!

We watched it at the cinema and it was sooo very quiet. The was no laughing out loud. No other company see to be able to match Dreamworks. With so much choice in this area at them moment you are better of seeing one of the others. If you really want to see this then wait until it comes out on DVD, rent it and at least you can turn it off when the kids get bored, or you can fall asleep on sofa when watching it with them.

This may seem harsh and as I say it looks great, full of colour and it sounds great. Just dont expect the adult laughs that films like Shrek have. The only bit that raised a big laugh has something to do with the big pig and bouncing down the hillside. Lets just say it make the sort of noises that kids love to hear!!

I took the kids to the cinema to see this, and didn't expect much but I was wrong. For adults, you'll recognise scenes taken from other movies, such as war of the worlds. The story is endearing and perhaps reminds us that we should take time out to really listen to our kids. My kids loved the movie especially fish. 10 out of 10 from the Harrison Family.
