Fun With Dick and Jane

Fun with Dick and Jane: Jim Carrey and Tea Leoni

Dick Harper (Jim Carrey) has a high powered job at Globodyne, a beautiful wife (Tea Leoni) and a kid who speaks Spanish (because he spends all his days with the Mexican babysitter). Tapped for a promotion, Dick tells Jane to give up her job and crack open the champagne. But the new position turns out to be a poisoned chalice: Globodyne is a sinking ship, and Dick is left carrying the can on live TV as everything goes belly up.

Unemployment may not seem the most natural starting point for big laughs, but this remake of a 1977 George Segal, Jane Fonda comedy scores points for effort. It even finishes with a well-earned debt of thanks to Enron chiefs Kenneth Lay and Jeff Skilling.

Dick and Jane are prototypical middle class white collar workers living the American Dream (their names echo a series of reading learner books, the US equivalent to 'Janet and John'). So the joke is: (1) See these materialists stripped of all their wordly goods (2) Watch them try their hands at service sector jobs and fail dismally, and (3) Squirm as they embark on a life of crime, armed with a squirt gun and a second hand VW.

Fun with Dick and Jane: Jim CarreyWithout making any great claims on its behalf, Dean Parisot's movie does deliver on each of those three promises. Playful if a bit sloppy, it supplies enough story to keep Carrey sparking, but not so much as to damp his style. (Given that he also produced the film, that's presumably how he likes it.)

If you're keeping accounts, you might think the Harpers' crime spree is a little too lucrative too quickly (and what must the neighbours think?), but I suspect most audiences will be happy to go with the flow. Carrey and Leoni make a game pair of clowns, you want to let them show you a good time - and every so often they hit pay-dirt.

Unfortunately results for the last quarter are extremely disappointing. Dick and Jane get caught up in joke (4): a laboured and over-complicated plot to get even with their old Globodyne nemesis Alec Baldwin. It's a weak ending for a good-natured, fast-paced but decidedly uneven lark.

Rated - 4 starsGreat Movie! Funny and fluffy with Carry again...

A customer from Manchester, England , 21/01/2006

Jim Carry can almost make every film he is in a pleasure to watch, just because he is in it and his face is just absolutly fabulous! He is excellent in this film with his usuall comic reactions and outstanding preformance. Téa Leoni also plays a great part.

This is a great movie if you want a nice night out to the cinema or even a quiet night in when its out for rental. Funny, sweet and brings out a lovely point. Enjoy

Rated - 4 starsA great way to spend an afternoon...

A customer from Liverpool , 09/03/2006

Some of the reviews for this film are harsh in my opinion. I saw this at the cinema recently and I loved it. I only regret not taking my 9 year old daughter because she would have thoroughly enjoyed it. Carrey and Leoni are excellent in this, he's not as annoying or silly as he usually is and she is a great supporting actress, loved the disguises they came up with.

I found this movie original and fun and I would definitely recommend it as one for all the family.

Rated - 2 starsVery disappointing

Catherine from Surrey , 26/05/2006

Very disappointed after seeing this film because the trailed looked really funny. It's only after you've watched the film that you realise all the funny parts were in the trailer. Eight year olds might find this film funny but for grown-up's it's totally unoriginal, predictable and not in the slightest bit comedic. Carrey was very irritating...

Rated - 2 starsNot as much fun as they wanted us to have

I'd hoped this would be Mr & Mrs Bruce Smith Almighty. It sort of was, but just wasn't as good as either of those. (No Brad, no Jen, figures really.)

It's got its moments. Jim & Tea in balaclavas wearing voice alteration mics was pretty funny, and a few other scenes, but not enough else.

As another reviewer said, most of the best bits were in the trailer.
