Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-rabbit

Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-rabbit

The fate of the world hangs in the balance. Well, maybe not the entire world, but the fate of Tottington’s annual Giant Vegetable Contest at any rate – which is a pretty big deal in Tottington, the sort of place where a chap may be judged by the size of his prize marrow, and a lady’s melons are not to be sneezed at. There is nothing these good folk fear more than a marauding lepus. So who you gonna call? ‘Anti Pesto’ of course, the humane rabbit control specialists, aka Messrs Wallace and Gromit. They can rid – and safely relocate – an entire field of cuddly vermin in seconds flat with their patented ‘Bunny Vac’. If only Wallace didn’t get it into his bonce to try to reform his floppy-eared foe by dabbling in a spot of ‘harmless brain alteration’…

Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-rabbitI have a confession to make. I thought Chicken Run was disappointing. In fact I’ll go further. I thought a lot of it was mediocre: too many bad puns, not enough real character, wit or dramatic energy. (I guess it’s hard to give depth to a chicken.) You might want to bear that in mind when I say that Nick Park’s second feature-length claymation movie is the funniest film I’ve seen all year. Successfully morphing a peculiar Little England tradition of gentle self-mockery with such classic horror tales as Frankenstein, Dr Jeckyll and Mr Hyde, King Kong and of course The Curse of the Werewolf, it’s an endlessly inventive piece of work worthy of Wallace himself.

Wallace and Gromt: The Curse of the Were-rabbitIn short, Wallace & Gromit fans are in for a treat: the exciting story easily sustains itself over an 85 minute running time, and Park & co find unexpected but entirely appropriate ways to enrich and unhinge this already well-loved comedy duo. Even the introduction of Brit flick royalty Helena Bonham Carter and Ralph Fiennes turns out to be an inspired touch. With laughs flowing thick and fast from first frame to last, The Curse of the Were-rabbit promises to become a firm family favourite.

Critics' Reviews

New York Times

The animation is a marvel... The world of Wallace and Gromit is one of the few genuinely eccentric places left in the movies, a place where lumpy, doughy characters achieve a peculiar dignity...

Entertainment Weekly

The movie rollicks with visual slapstick, puns, and drive-by joke-cluster bombs that fall on young and adult viewers alike with such good aim...

USA Today

Charming and droll with shrewdly chosen voices.... An adorable exercise in whimsy...

This is a fantastic movie. I know this is going to win the oscar for best animation. The charcters are briliant. You've got to watch this movie. It is a real work of masterpiece. Way better then 'Chicken Run' If your a Wallace and Gromit fan, you will find this film as good as the shorts.

This is a masterpiece of animation, so funny and so detailed. It is a film that begs to be watched over and over again and will be, by everyone, because it works so well on all levels.

Simply fantastic!

I saw this film in the cinema the day it was released, a week before the Premiere ... Was it worh real money, I took 3 of my 4 kids, YES. As Meg Ryan would have said had she been in a Jane Austen film, quite so. This film is great, every bit as good as the other three Wallace and Gromit films. Look, I'm a real fan, I kept quiet about Chicken Run, but this is a really good film. I only gave it 5 stars because there were not 6 available... Watch and enjoy, it's real fun ...

I dont care what anyone says this is an absolute classic, and you cannot judge it until you've watched it. This gives so much more than the previous Nick Park animations, with so many more very UNSUBTLE adult references that would go straight over the kids' heads. I would watch it again just to see the bunnies!! they are so entertaining! I must go and see it again and i dont care if they're playing this every christmas for years to come it deserves to be!

I had higher hopes for this but ended up dozing off somewhere along the way. Wallace and Grommit will always have a place in our hearts though. Pity the story was a bit lame.

A return to big-screen form after the dismal 'let's pander to the American market' Chicken Run. You really have to see the film at least three times to pick up the teeming visual gags.

And yes, the rabbits are adorable. I want one for a pet, and I also want one of Gromit's puppies...
