The Illusionist

The Illusionist

Fans of The Prestige will want to compare and contrast The Illusionist, another mystery thriller set in the world of magic at the tail end of the nineteenth century.

Edward Norton stars as the great Eisenheim, an illusionist whose acclaim reaches the court of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Crown Prince Leopold (Rufus Sewell) is sufficiently amused to invite him to perform at the castle, but becomes resentful when the entertainer catches the eye of the Prince's betrothed, Duchess Sophie van Taschen (Jessica Biel). Determined to expose the magician's tricks, the Prince only ends up further humiliated.

It turns out there is history between Sophie and Eisenheim. They were childhood sweethearts separated by the social gulf between them. Now he wants to reclaim his beloved. But when Sophie tells the Prince he is furious, and a tragedy ensues.

The Illusionist

Written and directed by Neil Burger, based on a short story by Steven Millhauser, The Illusionist is handsomely produced and mildly diverting, but it's surprising that some people prefer it to Christopher Nolan's much more sophisticated narrative. Perhaps it's the melodrama that appeals: a love story between a poor boy and a lovely aristocrat with a scheming evil prince between them, it's practically an old fashioned fairytale.

The initial conflict holds plenty of promise (with Sewell practically frothing at the mouth as he's outwitted by a common entertainer), but the mystery hinges entirely on a plot twist that will strike some viewers as blatantly obvious nearly an hour before the end. Adding insult to injury, and unlike the scrupulously fair Prestige, the magic show here is a cheat, a display of unscrupulous sleight of hand on the part of director Neil Burger, not Eisenheim.

The Illusionist

Aside from Sewell, the outstanding performance comes from Paul Giamatti as the detective trying to tread a middle way between serving a tyrant and making the magician disappear. Jessica Biel acts like she's never seen a corset before (which is probably the case), and while Norton musters a certain amount of flourish, his flat, monotonous voice is more likely to put you to sleep than cast a spell (a semi-German accent doesn't help).

Rated - 5 starsI'm under no illusion...this is great !

This is a beautifully filmed really good film, that is made great by its actors. Edward Norton is just superb as Eisenheim the illusionist, but Paul Giamatti as the inspector, Jessica Biel as Sophie and Rufus Sewell as Crown Prince leopold are similarly excellent. The whole thing just comes together really well and makes for a really interesting film.

Although it is just a story, it does have a whiff of reality in the portrayal of Crown Prince of Austria, who was a real odd bod, who, to all intents and purposes ended the Habsburg monarchy on his controvertial death with his mistress in 1889. It is still not known if it was really suicide or if they were murdered.

This film is well worth a watch.

I was not sure what to expect from The Illusionist, but the film kept me hooked from beginning to end. The surprises, the twists and the great performances by Norton and Giamatti make this another movie to add to the collection. I highly recommend it.

I love it when this happens. You know, when you get a movie and aren't really expecting much from it but it turns out to be really good! Well this is firmly in this category for my missis and me.

Good strong storyline that hooks you very early in the movie and maintains it throughout. Add in the strength of Ed Norton et al's excellent acting and you get a great movie!

The basic storyline is obviously pretty well described in the trailer summary - but it didn't get us excited - and therefore probably doesn't do it justice. A very good movie - well worth watching.

Interesting premise on a magician/illusionist as they use to be further back in time. Better film than thePrestige. The illusionist falls for a lady being courted by the aristocracy, a rather nasty bit of work. How revenge is sweet as you will see in the latter part of the film.
