Staff Top Tips for 2012


Before the festive season we gave you our top films of last year; now, it’s time for the LOVEFiLM team's top tips for 2012. Some big movies are heading into cinemas this year (many with superheroes involved), but our lists are actually quite eclectic - take a look at the films we can’t wait to watch…

Set in the 1930s Arab states at the dawn of the oil boom, the story centres on a young Arab prince torn between allegiance to his conservative father and modern, liberal father-in-law. From the director of Enemy at the Gates and Seven Years in Tibet, Black Gold stars Tahar Rahim, Mark Strong, Antonio Banderas and Freida Pinto. In cinemas 24 February.

Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) is a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney) in command of his last flight before retiring. But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left. But the only way home may be to go further out into the terrifying expanse of space. Directed by Alfonso Cuarón, Gravity is scheduled for UK cinemas 19 October.

Marty (Colin Farrell) is a struggling writer who dreams of finishing his screenplay Seven Psychopaths. All he needs is a little focus and inspiration. Billy (Sam Rockwell) is Marty’s best friend, an unemployed actor and part time dog thief, who wants to help Marty by any means necessary. Hans (Christopher Walken) is Billy’s partner in crime. When Billy and Hans steal a psychopathic gangster’s dog, Marty has all the inspiration he needs, just as long as he lives to tell the tale. Release TBC.

Rust and Bone

Rust and Bone

Marion Cotillard stars in this adaptation of Craig Davidson's short story collection Rust and Bone. The film is helmed by A Prophet director Jacques Audiard, who has re-teamed with co-writer Thomas Bidegain. The French production also stars Bouli Lanners, Celine Sallette, and Matthias Schoenarts. Release is TBC.

Trance

Trance

Danny Boyle’s next feature is a thriller centred on a botched art heist that pits two men against one another, though they both develop unusual relationships with the same woman. The film is post-production and release is TBC, but the cast is shaping up nicely, with James McAvoy, Rosario Dawson and Vincent Cassel all attached.

Officer Dave Brown (Woody Harrelson) is a Vietnam vet and a Rampart Precinct cop, dedicated to doing "the people's dirty work" and asserting his own code of justice, often blurring the lines between right and wrong. When he gets caught on tape beating a suspect, he finds himself in a personal and emotional downward spiral as the consequences of his past sins and his refusal to change his ways seal his fate.

Based on the 70's UK TV show, The Sweeney focuses on a hardened detective in the Flying Squad of London's Metropolitan police. Ray Winstone will play the role of Jack Regan, with Ben Drew, also known as rapper Plan B, taking the role of George Carter. The film is written and directed by Nick Love and is slated for release on 21 September.

Skyfall

Skyfall

In Skyfall, Bond’s loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost. Sam Mendes is directing and Daniel Craig stars as Bond for the third time. Joining the cast are Javier Bardem, Naomie Harris, Bérénice Marlohe. Ralph Fiennes, Albert Finney and Ben Whishaw.
