Staff Top Tips for 2012
Before the festive season we gave you our top films of last year; now, it’s time for the LOVEFiLM team's top tips for 2012. Some big movies are heading into cinemas this year (many with superheroes involved), but our lists are actually quite eclectic - take a look at the films we can’t wait to watch…

2012 will no doubt be a cracking year for re-makes & re-boots, but look a little deeper and there are some sterling films from a whole host of top-notch directors, including Jacques Audiard (who gave us A Prophet) and Martin McDonagh (In Bruges). 2012 is shaping up to be a big year for great directors.
Black Gold
Set in the 1930s Arab states at the dawn of the oil boom, the story centres on a young Arab prince torn between allegiance to his conservative father and modern, liberal father-in-law. From the director of Enemy at the Gates and Seven Years in Tibet, Black Gold stars Tahar Rahim, Mark Strong, Antonio Banderas and Freida Pinto. In cinemas 24 February.
Gravity
Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) is a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney) in command of his last flight before retiring. But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left. But the only way home may be to go further out into the terrifying expanse of space. Directed by Alfonso Cuarón, Gravity is scheduled for UK cinemas 19 October.
Seven Psychopaths
Marty (Colin Farrell) is a struggling writer who dreams of finishing his screenplay Seven Psychopaths. All he needs is a little focus and inspiration. Billy (Sam Rockwell) is Marty’s best friend, an unemployed actor and part time dog thief, who wants to help Marty by any means necessary. Hans (Christopher Walken) is Billy’s partner in crime. When Billy and Hans steal a psychopathic gangster’s dog, Marty has all the inspiration he needs, just as long as he lives to tell the tale. Release TBC.
Rust and Bone
Marion Cotillard stars in this adaptation of Craig Davidson's short story collection Rust and Bone. The film is helmed by A Prophet director Jacques Audiard, who has re-teamed with co-writer Thomas Bidegain. The French production also stars Bouli Lanners, Celine Sallette, and Matthias Schoenarts. Release is TBC.
Trance
Danny Boyle’s next feature is a thriller centred on a botched art heist that pits two men against one another, though they both develop unusual relationships with the same woman. The film is post-production and release is TBC, but the cast is shaping up nicely, with James McAvoy, Rosario Dawson and Vincent Cassel all attached.

There are some massive films coming out this year but it’s the more independent, gritty dramas that get me excited. My favourite film of last year was Animal Kingdom (I may have mentioned it), so I’m hoping 2012 will deliver something just as good.
Wild Bill
Dexter Fletcher's directorial debut combines a host of rising British talent with the Lock, Stock alumni. Bill Hayward (Charlie Creed-Miles) is paroled from prison after eight-years inside. He returns to his family home to discover his ex-wife has left their 11 (Sammy Williams) and 15-year-old (Will Poulter) sons to fend for themselves. Bill doesn’t know how to be a dad, and his sons aren’t sure they want one.
Rampart
Officer Dave Brown (Woody Harrelson) is a Vietnam vet and a Rampart Precinct cop, dedicated to doing "the people's dirty work" and asserting his own code of justice, often blurring the lines between right and wrong. When he gets caught on tape beating a suspect, he finds himself in a personal and emotional downward spiral as the consequences of his past sins and his refusal to change his ways seal his fate.
Black Gold

The Sweeney
Based on the 70's UK TV show, The Sweeney focuses on a hardened detective in the Flying Squad of London's Metropolitan police. Ray Winstone will play the role of Jack Regan, with Ben Drew, also known as rapper Plan B, taking the role of George Carter. The film is written and directed by Nick Love and is slated for release on 21 September.
Skyfall
In Skyfall, Bond’s loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost. Sam Mendes is directing and Daniel Craig stars as Bond for the third time. Joining the cast are Javier Bardem, Naomie Harris, Bérénice Marlohe. Ralph Fiennes, Albert Finney and Ben Whishaw.

War Horse
War Horse begins with the remarkable friendship between a horse named Joey and a young man called Albert, who tames and trains him. The Muppets
Walter, the world's biggest Muppet fan, and his friends Gary (Jason Segel) and Mary (Amy Adams) discover the nefarious plan of oilman Tex Richman (Chris Cooper) to raze the Muppet Theatre and drill for the oil recently discovered beneath the Muppets' former stomping grounds. To stage The Greatest Muppet Telethon Ever and raise the $10 million needed to save the theatre, Walter, Mary and Gary help Kermit reunite the Muppets, who have all gone their separate ways.

Merida is a skilled archer and impetuous daughter of King Fergus and Queen Elinor. Determined to carve her own path in life, she defies an age-old custom but her actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom. When she turns to an eccentric old Wise Woman for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. The ensuing peril forces Merida to discover the meaning of true bravery in order to undo a beastly curse before it's too late.

Men In Black 3
Agents J (Will Smith) and K (Tommy Lee Jones) are back... in time. J has seen some inexplicable things in his 15 years with the Men in Black, but nothing, not even aliens, perplexes him as much as his wry, reticent partner. But when K's life and the fate of the planet are put at stake, Agent J will have to travel back in time to put things right.

The story revolves around United Nations employee Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt), who traverses the world in a race against time to stop the Zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments and threatening to decimate humanity itself. Mireille Enos plays Gerry’s wife Karen Lane; Daniella Kertesz is his comrade in arms, Segen.
Total Recall
Director Len Wiseman (Underworld) jumps into the remake game with this retooling of Philip K. Dick's short story We Can Remember It for You Wholesale, originally brought to the big screen by Paul Verhoeven in the 1990 sci-fi action eye-popper starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Colin Farrell stars as a blue-collar worker whose grip on his own identity breaks down after realising he might be a spy. In cinemas 22 August.

A killer who works for the mob of the future recognizes one of his targets as his future self. Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis and Emily Blunt, it hits cinemas in 28 September.

It’s safe to say there are some huge action-adventure films coming out this year, but I’m most excited about Tim Burton’s reimagining of a 1960s vampire TV show and Tarsem Singh’s take on Snow White. Both Dark Shadows and Mirror Mirror look amazingly stylised, and have incredible casts.

Very excited about the return to Tolkien’s Middle Earth with The Hobbit. Peter Jackson did an incredible job with the Lord Of The Rings trilogy so I’m expecting more of the same. Martin Freeman will make a great Bilbo, too.

Chronicle
Three high school students make an incredible discovery, leading to their developing uncanny powers beyond their understanding. Even as they learn to control their abilities and use them to their advantage, their lives start to spin out of control because their darker sides begin to take over.
John Carter of Mars
This film tells the story of war-weary, former military captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and the captivating Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). In a world on the brink of collapse, Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of Barsoom and its people rests in his hands.

The Dark Knight Rises
The Dark Knight Rises is the epic conclusion of Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy. Leading an all-star international cast, Christian Bale again plays the dual role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. The film also stars Anne Hathaway, as Selina Kyle; Tom Hardy, as Bane; Marion Cotillard as Miranda Tate; and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, as John Blake. Returning to the main cast Michael Caine plays Alfred; Gary Oldman is Commissioner Gordon; and Morgan Freeman reprises the role of Lucius Fox.
Brave
Merida is a skilled archer and impetuous daughter of King Fergus and Queen Elinor. Determined to carve her own path in life, she defies an age-old custom but her actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom. When she turns to an eccentric old Wise Woman for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. The ensuing peril forces Merida to discover the meaning of true bravery in order to undo a beastly curse before it's too late.
