The daughter of actors Jon Voight and Marcheline Bertrand, Angelina Jolie’s career started in modeling in her early teens, she quickly moved into acting and her big screen break came in 1995, when she starred in the thriller Hackers, where she met her first husband, Johnny Lee Miller. The film failed to drum up a profit at the box office, but has since developed a cult following.

The Bone Collector

The Bone Collector (1999)

Channeling the sexy-women-in-uniform look, Jolie played a detective in this thriller co-starring Denzel Washington. Whilst the film delivered at the box office critics were left unimpressed, although it helped raise Jolie’s profile as an actress. Eleven years later and Jolie has reteamed with director Phillip Noyce for one of this summer’s big releases, Salt.

Girl, Interrupted

Girl, Interrupted (1999)

Thanks to her electric performance as sociopath Lisa, Jolie’s credibility as a serious and versatile actress rocketed. Despite sharing the screen with Winona Ryder, Brittany Murphy, Whoopi Goldberg and Vanessa Redgrave, Jolie stood out above the rest, winning that year’s Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. As well as playing the film’s lead role, Ryder was also executive producer and persuaded James Mangold (Walk The Line, Knight & Day) to sign on as director.

Gone In 60 Seconds (2000)

Mega-producer Jerry Bruckheimer is behind this remake of the 1974 film of the same name. Sporting bleach blonde dreadlocks, Jolie played the girlfriend of Nic Cages’s character, Randall "Memphis" Raines. Full of fast-paced action, illegal behavior and dangerous stunts, it’s the kind of role we know Jolie loves to play (see below, plus add Wanted and Taking Lives to the mix).

The role that helped Jolie’s sex appeal reach new levels, Jolie was picked to play the iconic video game character on the big screen. Despite the two having a turbulent relationship, Lara Croft's father is played by the actress’ real life father Jon Voight. Although Jolie was seen as the perfect fit for the role, the film was panned by critics. Beyond Borders (2003)

Directed by Martin Campbell (Edge of Darkness, Casino Royale), Jolie co-stars with Clive Owen in this drama about aid workers. Although It was a critical and financial failure, the film is worthy of a top 10 spot because of its effect on Jolie’s personal life. The actress adopted Maddox, her first son, whilst filming in Cambodia, and was inspired to get involved with third world aid and relief work causes. She is now a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005)

Two words: Brad Pitt. Five years and six children later, the actors form one of the most famous couples in the world. Although critics weren’t huge fans of the film, they agreed on one thing; the sizzling chemistry of the lead actors. Pitt and Jolie were each paid a cool $20m for their roles, but as the film was a huge financial success, they were more than worth it.

The Good Shepherd (2005)

Thirteen years after The Bronx Tale, Robert De Niro turned his hand to directing again, with this Cold War drama. Written by Eric Roth (Forrest Gump, The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button ), the story is loosely based on real events about the birth of counter-intelligence. Jolie returned to a more serious role playing the wife of Matt Damon’s CIA officer.

A Mighty Heart

A Mighty Heart (2007)

The film is based on the real life kidnapping and beheading of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, and adapted from his wife’s memoir A Mighty Heart: The Brave Life & Death of My Husband Danny Pearl. Brad Pitt, who produced the film, was inspired to bring the story to the big screen after he watched an interview with Mariane Pearl on the news. Although Jolie was criticised for playing a black woman, Mariane said she’d asked the actress to play her.

Changeling (2008)

Clint Eastwood apparently agreed to direct this film the same afternoon he read the script. Working with such an established director further raised Jolie’s game as a serious actress, and her emotional performance earned her a Best Actress Oscar nomination. Set in 1928, the film is based on the real life story about a woman who is reunited with her missing son, only to discover he is an imposter.
