if you are interested in chinese history and can read very small writing very fast then you might enjoy this one if a bit more time was taken for people to understand what was being said and what was happening it would be good if it was redone with this in mind i would like to give it another go

This film is aimed at a chinese audience interested in their revolution in 1911. I hadn't the foggiest idea what was going on and who the characters were.

  • Technically good but not engaging

I gave up half way through this film. It is in Chinese with English subtitles - but that is the least of its problems. It hops around so much from place to place and character to character that it is a) difficult to follow and b) difficult to feel any empathy for any of the characters because they are so poorly drawn. The subtitles are easy to read on my 47' TV, but the text screens that are meant to link the scenes are a) tiny print and b) not on the screen long enough to read. On the plus side, the technical aspects of the film (HD video, HiFi surround sound) are excellent - it's just a pity that I found it so difficult to engage with it.

  • Confusing but epic

    Rated - 2.0 stars

1911 is an ambitious film but unfortunately its tackling such a big subject it comes across as a bit of a mess.

It introduces a bewildering array of characters all of who are introduced on screen but in writing so tiny its almost impossible to make out - if this seems like a minor quibble bear in mind this is also how they describe major historical events and they come so thick and fast that at one point I had no idea which side was advancing on which city.

If you are familiar with the 1911 revoloution (though I don't think many people are) you should follow it fine but if you are a casual viewer after an asian epic like me you will probably find it sadly lacking.

This slow drama is hampered by huge chunks of minute writing periodically placed on screen - presumably to fill you in on what's going on - at the same time as fast dialogue subtitles are playing. This is a drama and not an action or war film and so it is heavy on dialogue, and I just couldn't see the huge chunks of info (on a 37' widescreen TV) so I lost the plot, got bored and tuned out.

  • A Satisfying historical epic for Jackie Chan

    Rated - 3.5 stars

Jackie Chan demonstrates once again that he can act in a film that would seem to be quite heavy chinese propaganda if the english translations of all the subtitled historical notes that come on-screen are accurate. That's not to say its a bad film - there are some good set piece battle scenes and although the english/american parts are mostly hammed up as happens in quite a lot of chinese films (Ip Man 2 especially) its generally a satisfying and ultimately educational experience.
