I really enjoyed the film but i got the feeling you needed to have read the book first, i was constantly telling the wife what was going on and why it came about, because so much of the book was missed out and she had not read it.
It's hard for a film to do justice to a book as important as 1984, one of the most important novels of the 20th century. The film does a good job, and features brilliant acting by John Hurt, but ultimately I was hoping for a bit more. I was hoping to see something a bit more emotionally gripping along the lines of 'Brazil' or 'The Wall', but it didn't quite happen. I suppose part of the problem was that I don't think Suzanna Hamilton is the right choice for Julia. She was far too young and attractive for me to believe in any chemistry between her and John Hurt.
On the whole, I would say this film was almost right. The story itself is grim and not enjoyable, but it's very important, and the superb acting by Hurt and Richard Burton redeem the film to a great extent.
