20 Million Miles To Earth

The first space flight to Venus returns to Earth carrying a specimen of Venusian life called the Ymir. When the ship crashes into the sea upon its re-entry into Earth's atmosphere, the small, reptilian creature escapes, growing to an enormous size, eventually terrorizing the city of Rome. The always beautiful and impressive creature animations of the great Ray Harryhausen elevate the film above the level of ordinary 1950's monster sci-fi. The Ymir is one of the best-known creations in his long, distinguished career.

A spaceship returning from an expedition to Venus crashes near Sicily, releasing a fast-growing reptilian beast that rampages through Rome in one of animation master Ray Harryhausen's best fantasy films, and his own personal favourite. The snake-tailed giant Ymir monster is also one of Harryhausen's finest creations: it has a well-defined personality and manages to evoke sympathy for its bewildered plight. The Ymir's fight with an elephant and the Roman locations — especially the climactic Colosseum battle — add unique touches to this minor classic.

One of Ray Harryhausen's earlier films, this is among the best monster-on-the-rampage movies from the fifties and sixties. An expedition to Venus returns to Earth, bringing with them a strange alien creature which soon begins to grow to giant proportions. What makes this film is Harryhausen's superb animation. The alien 'Ymir' is imaginatively-designed and is an interesting and, as with a lot of Harryhausen's monsters, you feel real sympathy for it. Look quickly for a cameo from Harryhausen as a zoo keeper

    Decent 1950s Sci-Fi

20 Million Miles to Earth is a decent 1950s Sci-Fi movie. It is obviously a black & white film with stop motion animation (by the fantastic Ray Harryhausen) for the special effects. The plot is OK and the acting is passable, but the film doesn't really excite as much as other Ray Harryhausen films.
