i've watched this film many, many times...with many people...most of whom have fallen asleep during it.

    i love it.

the pace, the visuals, the score...the scope.

    one of the all-time greats.

It's very easy to fall asleep through this movie, but it is a classic and therefore worth a go. Even if it's just for the surreal bits!

After reading all the reviews on here I was looking forward to watching this but I must have missed something. I love sci fi but this film was the most boring film I have ever watched. Very little dialogue and the music starts to grate after a while. I have no real idea what was going on. I think you need to read the book first so you know what to expect.

  • Start of a genre

I must admit from the outset, this film is difficult to follow because it takes so long getting to any kind of point. There isn't much dialogue, most of which is probably provided by the HAL 9000 so what there is you really need to follow otherwise you'll miss something. Kubrick only features the bits you really need to see so the story can seem disjointed but the moments of realisation especially towards the end are well played. I can't give this 5 stars as there were films from the same era that had better script and story, better paced, take much of Hitchcock and within 10 years we have star wars. I can see much of the inspiration and set pieces that appear in other films and it was the start of a genre, a slow start though, be prepared to put some effort in to give this its proper due.

An interesting experiment on endurance and tedium - but otherwise a great cure for insomnia. I do actually like the movie, but not too keen on the length. I think I may have spotted Keir Dullea in the movie too. Leonard Rossiterski - vee luff you . . .

  • Truly Incredible

Words cannot describe what a phenomenal-feat of a film this movie is. From its orchestral swell at the beginning, to the famous Blue Danube during the pivotal set-pieces, Kubrick shows us what could have been and what still could be. Charting man's achievements from simple apes, to near-masters of our galaxy through our sub-conscious curiosity-driven pursuit toward the heavens and beyond, and what we might find there. It is a cautionary tale about our dependence on technology, our lust for knowledge, and above all: power. Perhaps slow to a fault for some, 2001 none the less manages to capture the beauty and majesty of space-exploration a full year before astronauts even landed on the moon, and on Blu Ray it looks just that bit more stunning with background details you simply will not believe would have come from a film which began production in 1964. Do yourself a favor, watch this film, then give it time and watch it again, and be amazed at the level of thought that went into each scene, and the little clues which once all added up allow for the viewer to piece together for themselves what the at-a-glance vague 2001 is really about.
