This film starts with several school/college kids going on a road trip and they end up arriving in a throwback civil war town and they are the guests of honour with free food and drink to boot. however soon the killings start with plenty of tounge in cheek death scenes and stereotyping country folk .
The gore and effects are above average with plenty of jokes hidden in the works. Robert England is a hit as the mayor and the film has a suprize ending for you
Remember (Country voice) Shes just playing hard to get!!!!!!!
An enjoyable enough horror movie for the most part, but it seemed to be missing something and felt pretty pointless and hollow in the end. The film has blood, nudity, lesbians, incest, bestiality, cannibalism, racism, and homophobia (so it is never really boring), the death-scenes are fun to watch, and the gore effects are effective (even if they are cheap looking), but it is pretty clichéd and really unimpressive in the end, with no interesting or developed characters, and therefore no-one of the viewer to really root for. The film has a good mix of experienced actors (Robert Englund, Peter Stormare(from Prison Break), Lyn Shyne) and young actors, and Robert Englund & Lyn Shyne put in solid performances, but everyone seems to be under-used (especially Peter Stormare). 2001 Maniacs is an interesting film which shows potential, but said potential is never really met.
Please do not waste your life watching this pap, it's just AWFUL! Why does Robert Englund ever get any work - He's BAD!
We really enjoyed this horror comedy, a bit weird but also very funny in places. Its more comedy than horror as a lot of the kill scenes are absurd but amusing! Worth a watch!
Cartoon like special effects, with popping eyes and nothing special in the horror or the comedy at all.
Even the gore was low budget

This is a remake of an old 50/60s film called 2000 maniacs. While the horror is par for the course, there are some solid performance and scary moments. The film also takes the piss out of PC taboos such as inbreeding, racism and americans in general. It is no surprise the director is close to the makers of South Park!!
In a time where decent horror movies are at an all time low, this is a gem of a movie, made by horror fans, for horror fans
What a great film I only put it on my list to make the numbers up, this film has some very humerous moments to go along with the Gore & Comical sex scenes. Very funny and not really what you would expect from a horror film with Englund in the lead role, however I would recomend this film to anyone.
I gave the original 2000 Maniacs, a 4 of 5 star rating, and feel free to read my review of it.
This one, however, ruined everything that was great about the original. It did not feel old South at all, the music was pathetic. The original had a wonderful theme song, but this one just repeated the chorus over and over without the verses, and didn't do it very well.
Ok, this one did have better gore, and considering it is made 30 years later, it is hard not to. But it did not master the contrast between a friendly, folksy small Southern town and brutal murder the way the original did. I'm not being puritanical, but the townsfolk were incestuous lesbians, a man raping sheep and cats. It just isn't funny without the contrast. If the villains are just plain despicable, than it defeats the whole purpose. What happened to the nice friendly town singing good ol' blue grass, friendly as can be, and slaughtering people?
The only thing worth while was Robert Englund's did do an excellent performance. Maybe I am just saying that out of deference to the Freddy Kruger guy, but I thought his role as mayor was amusing. Other than that, this is complete garbage with a few mediocre sex scenes. I gave it only 1 star, and almost gave it zero. Best to just avoid this one.
Rented this on the strength of a trailer I saw which showed some interesting (for want of a better word) and rather painful death scenes...and being a sucker for a horror and a good 'b movie' thought 'why not'...unfortunately I spent most of the film waiting for the cast to start getting killed off....(well, thats why you watch them)....the story line was pretty week, but then its ment to be (same old story of group of people take a short cut that they shouldnt have), and the cast were ok...but not enough to make this stand out...
Not a terrible film but couldn't recommended it...I'd say if there's nothing on, give it ago, otherwise wait for 2002 maniacs lol
This film is nothing short of shocking and I dont mean in a good way. It has got to be one of the worst films I have ever seen. Now, I am a huge fan of the cheesy slash em up genre and have seen some bad films, but this takes the biscuit. How this film ever got made is beyond me, it must have been a case of sheer nepotism. The story line is just appalling, the script and acting are worse than dire and the special effects are so bad that I could do better with a camcorder, some rubber limbs and a bottle of ketchup! Please do not rent this movie; I beg of you, please use two hours of your life doing something less painful, like sticking bamboo under your toenails! The makers and cast of this film should be tried for crimes against humanity! I want my life and money back!
This film is pathetic, absolutely awful. It is, literally, an hour and a half of your life that you're never getting back.
The acting, plot, special effects, everything about the film is lazy, There's no effort made whatsoever by the film-makers and it shows.
After watching it, I was left feeling ill.
Not because of the blood and gore (frankly, I could do better with a bottle of ketchup), rather I felt nauseous at the idea this film was ever allowed to be made.
Was set for this to be another rubbish horror movie but was pleasantly suprised to find it wasn't as lame as many others. I found the storyline slightly confused but still found the film very enjoyable and funny whilst also having those macabre scenes.
Worth the watch in my point of view!
