(829)Paper thin
By UmnaRoaw (2 reviews) , 27 Apr 2013Had to turn it off after a while. Everything turned up to 1000% except the characters and story which were paper thin. The worst film I've (partially) seen in a very long time.- Was this review helpful to you?

Very poor disaster porn
By Bobsview (554 reviews) from Gloucestershire , 11 Apr 2013Difficult to express how bad this film is. It is just an excuse for special effects and disaster pornography. Its a rehash of The Day after Tomorrow, Armageddon, and highly formulaic (separated couple get back together, the family dog, etc) with a James Bond style set of super Arks to finish what is an impossibly bad film with weak script, ridiculous plot and special effects bonanza.- Was this review helpful to you?

A Guilty Pleasure
By Tish2 (142 reviews) from London , 05 Feb 2013[Highly rated reviewer]
The Japanese movie Virus (1980) is one of my favourite post-apocalyptic movies of all time, simply because it is so bad it is good; 2012 on the other hand is just bad, although this is probably an exaggeration. It does have all the essential disaster ingredients and then some, but perhaps my expectations of it were higher because it is so modern and technically up to date. Some of the special effects are pretty spectacular - gone is the found footage montage used in Virus to symbolize the end of the world as we know it, instead 2012 is direct and in your face, but one can only be impressed so many times by people running just ahead of disaster as the whole world literally crumbles behind them. Subtlety isnt meant to be a part of this film and it virtually bellows here are some special effects BE IMPRESSED, here is an emotive scene GET READY TO WEEP. Some degree of silliness is to be expected, it isnt a documentary after all, but the archetypal end of the world hippies are stereotypical in the extreme and the estranged father (played by John Cusack) able to become an expert pilot after only two flying lessons surely tests the limits of those most ardently willing to suspend their disbelief. 2012 is too long, too loud and too spectacular for my tastes, although there is something strangely therapeutic about witnessing the end of the world from the comfort of your own living room. Such wide scale disaster is also a great leveller and produces a sense of equality that is not present in everyday life; undoubtedly a guilty pleasure.- Was this review helpful to you?

Disaster averted
By ajl36 (8 reviews) , 18 Jan 2013You know what you're in for with a Roland Emmerich movie and this one generally delivers. The film has the right amount of science in there for those interested in climate change, a fair bit of action and amazing visuals that we've come to know already from The Day After Tomorrow. Altogether a decent combination, supported by some good actors. The film never quite strays the wrong side of the Hollywood line of schmaltz, despite the plot following a family central to the movie. A 3/5 star film although perhaps nearer to 3. 5- Was this review helpful to you?

Perhaps not so unbelievable!
By Zwitterion (7 reviews) from London , 09 Jan 2013I have watched this film twice with a good time interval between. At first I was not so impressed with the story since the events, although believable at first, then become OTT which make you loose your connection. The graphics are exceptional though. Also I believe that the governments' strategies in face of such an event would be so different as depicted in this movie and be more like Spielberg's description with his people lottery in Impact. We have tendency to take things literally most of the time but what if we question our concept of reality. Is what we see really real and not a figment of our imagination? 'Life is but a dream'. Anyway, never read about quantum theories during a mid-life crisis and question the entire existence of your reality, it is truly 2012 (the movie) in my head, polar shifts, tectonic plates reshuffling and massive flooding, the F word would be appropriate to use here. So this movie is not a complete loss to me as all it represents is a total re-structuring of my world within and my perception of the outside. Looking forward to settle down into my new world.- Was this review helpful to you?
