1. 29 Acacia Avenue: Disappointing. As a fan of Gordon Harker I expected to see more of him and less of the uninspiring cast. He is not really on his best form here and the plotline is entirely predictable.
2. Operation Cupid: A very weak effort despite the cast's best endeavours. Not sure if this was ever a stage play but the presentation was hammy and overacted against an overly simplistic storyline. Might work in live theatre but not on celluloid.- Was this review helpful to you?

Of these two films from British studios in the mid to late 'forties, '29 Acacia Avenue' is the more interesting, presenting a view of English suburbia as steady and solid, a way of showing British troops returning from the war that there was honey still for tea, while also poking mild fun at provincial parochialism and morality. Interesting to see Gordon Harker, a very popular British comic actor of the time who usually played cockneys, as the head of a middle-class family: his accent is worth a sociological treatise on its own. Both films, to be honest, are pretty awful, but the first has, at least, some historical interest and is fairly snappily directed by Henry Cass.- Was this review helpful to you?
