The first, second and last (eighth) of Paramount's supporting series of Bulldog Drummond comedy-thrillers. They are much more light-hearted than Sapper's rather unpleasant novels, and directed and played with a skill and delicacy that the material doesn't alway warrant.
At no point do any of the makers try to persuade you of the plausibility of the action or characterisations, and certainly no-one in the front office bothered spending any money on them. The results, however, are cheap and cheerful in the best way.
For reasons best known to the disc's distributors, the films are programmed out of order. You would be advised to watch 'Bulldog Drummond escapes' first, then 'BD comes back' and then 'BD's bride', not because there's any particular through-story, but just so you can get some inkling of the development of the idea.
Ray Milland plays Drummond first up,before he became too big a star and John Howard (the definitive interpretor) took over. Sir Guy Standing, John Barrymore and H B Warner are all Colonel Neilsen, and Reginald Denny and E E Clive play the light-relief sidekicks.
'Bulldog Drummond comes back' is the best of them; none of them will tax your faculties, and all of them should appeal to those who love the old Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes series, or The Falcon or Saint movies.
