The movie holds one's attention right from the initial scenes when the three murders are shown.
Using his directorial skills Kukunoor manages to paint a grim yet touching picture of lives gone wrong without making it gory and with the minimum use of dialogues.
Kukunoor leaves an impact on viewer?s mind with his depiction of the living conditions inside jail and simultaneously tells his story that reflects the prisoners? horrid pasts and their dreams and ambitions.
Jackie Shroff fits well in the role of convict who keeps himself busy by reciting English verses and cooking for the inmates. Nagesh too plays the middle-class youth from Hyderabad with conviction. And Nasseeruddin Shah undoubtedly stands out playing a rogue from Lucknow accused of murdering a bank employee in the course of a heist gone wrong.
Juhi Chawla too gives a noticeable performance as the documentary filmmaker who is going through a troubled marriage with an alcoholic, abusive husband.
Verdict: Brilliant. A must see.
