This is one of those great dusty, lowbudget '70's movies that draws you in with their weird atmosphere, dreamy pace, jangling cinematography and score. Duval is on superb form, and really makes the film as her deluded therapist shifts from being a vapid figure of fun to someone far more deserving of empathy. Spacek is also fanastic, her transformation being both thrilling and scary. The third woman in the tale is somewhat less convincing, and her larger involvement in the final act kind of lessens the films ultimate impact. For the most part however this is a spell binding mood piece, boasting a fanstically Lynchian dream sequence, well observed social satire and powerful performances.
