Ok the vampires, violence and vision of this film were exellent, but there's not much else to it. My main problem is that it could've all happened in one night, the only thing that changed from day 1 to day 30 was Hartnett's beard. At its roots its a survival horror film in the vein of Dawn of the Dead, but 30 days just doesnt ramp up the isolation, starvation and fraying character relations that 'Dawn' does so well.
All the film does to distinguish between days is pop a subtitle on your screen. If they put scratches effects on the screen and badly dubbed dialogue this could be the secret 3rd Grindhouse film because it feels that large sections of the film are missing between these 'day 17', 'day 30' subtitles. I feel a little bad about complaining about this though cos the book that spawned it was about the width of a hair and jumped pretty much from day 1 to day 30 but...
It is a solid horror though with the vampires probably being the best ones ever seen in the movies. The story isnt exactly the same as the book with little things changing to pave the way for set pieces. The violence was very realistic with the censors obviously napping during this one to give it a 15 cert.
With a little bit more focus on the passing time, growing desperation etc this could have been one of THE GREATS! However its just one that grates a little.
this is a film where you kinda have to leave youre brain at home, cause otherwise youll be getting frustrated by the ridiculousness of some of the situations - particularly the storeyline. The storey if thought about properly is ridiculous, so best not to really focus on the screaming at the back of youre mind - just focus on the pictures and the sound. In otherwords DO NOT THINK TOO MUCH, . If you can do this, than this film is quite entertaining. Some genuinelly frightening moments, so if you like to be scared - this will help. If the sudden sound of screaming and a lunatic jumping from the dark is youre thing, than thats a plus. Also there are seom pretty gory scenes, such as decapitations etc.... I dont object to gore if done properly, but I think they went a little overkill just becasue 'they could'. The makeup team had a lot of work to do, lets put it liike that. |
Acting wise - not bad, its amazing how calm and collected the characters were when there families were being destroyed infront of them, but whatever. Josh Hartnett's character is the likeable hero - wiling to lay his life on the line for others etc. etc.... very cliche, but I think with a film like this the cliche's are appropriate.
oh and a quick point. If you think Josh Hartnetts character is about to whip some ass in some matrix style whooping towards the end (youll know what i mean when it gets to that bit) be prepared to get VERY disapointed. I finally got excited at this point, but what an anticlimax.
good for quick couple of hours of midless gory laughs, but this film wont be winning any oscars - except maybe the 'brown trousers award'
The pop corn was nice though.
'That cold ain't the weather. That's death approaching.' So says a stranger Sheriff Eben (Josh Hartnett) has locked up after he got into a dispute down at the bar. All the man wanted was a plate of fresh hamburger meat, nice and juicy and raw. No crime in that surely? But this stranger - another vividly ratty performance by Ben Foster, who stole all his scenes as Russell Crowe's second in command in 3.10 to Yuma - it's obvious he's no good. Something's going on, and Eben needs to find out what Read more
