Funny but flat

As a follow up to the brilliant filme 'The Social Network' this seems like an odd choice but overall, it is a funny but uneven comedy about a pot-smoking pizza delivery guy (Eisenberg) who sits around all day watching 80s action movies and pining for his best friends sister. He is then kidnapped by two guys (McBride and Swardson) in monkey masks, our kidnappers strap a bomb to Nick (Eisenberg)and demand he rob a bank, so one of them can pay an assassin to kill his tyrannical father and inherit even larger sums of cash.
Yes the plot is bonkers and to be honest,a little bit far fetched but once you get beyond that there is quite a bit of humour, particularly in and of the by-play of Aziz Ansari and Eisenberg.
The film is short but even so it feels like this is a sketch that was padded out with lots of improv.
While there are some proper laugh out loud moments but there are odd moments where you aren't so sure because they feel like they were shoehorned in,especially with regards to some of the violence.
The McBride and Swardsons dumb-duo act is considerably more grating. However, if you like eastbound and down, I suspect you will definitely be busting your guts at the frequent profanity laden tirades, and the buddy chemistry that is present.
The film is loaded with all kinds of references which range from frat boy, to point break. It's fun and disposable.
While there are no direct comparison films, Zombieland, the social network and adventure land are much superior films. If you want broader humour start with eastbound and down, which is a brilliant showcase for Danny McBride. Or go for pineapple express and Superbad.- Was this review helpful to you?

(54)Poor - sad attempt at comedy
By Ilovefilmstoo (129 reviews) from Cumbria , 12 Apr 2013Oh...very weak film. Only gave 2 stars for a couple of funny moments...mainly it was tedious, unsophisticated rubbish....not even slapstick...the writeup of the film above is all you need - you could then watch it in silence. Plot is pretty pathetic as is the motivation poor. I watched it all the way through - just - but fortunately had my ipad with BubbleWitch to keep me entertainined.- Was this review helpful to you?

WATCH in 30 minutes or less
By Deltron (2 reviews) , 09 Mar 2013Very disappointing. Had expected it to be funny, hardly laughed at all. This was a good idea but need a much better script a- Was this review helpful to you?

30 mins or less is probably all you will watch
By a customer , 03 Dec 2012There is a point in this film that you will sit there and say, I'll give it 5 more minutes and if it doesn't improve, I'll switch it off. Unfortunately, that point is right at the start. However, if you can stick with it to at least 30 mins in, then it does start to get a little better. Not much but a bit. The last 10-15 mins are the best.- Was this review helpful to you?

Its Boring!!!
By Spongeymonkey (11 reviews) from England , 21 Nov 2012Everyone is saying it is the funniest movie of the summer. There was no humour in this film. It was so boring I was waiting for the bomb to go off so the movie would be over.
I thought from the director of Zombieland it would be a lot better. Near the end it did get a little better..only because maybe the end of the movie was in sight. Nick Swardson was the stand out character. If there was comic relief it came from him.- Was this review helpful to you?

30 MINUTES OR LESS IS ALL IT NEED !!
By MADONMOVIES (62 reviews) , 29 Oct 2012Thought this was going to be a really good film. Sorry to say it did not quite make the grade for 3 stars and only just made it to 2 stars..
Slow start but gets a little better with a couple of funny bits thrown in but a couple is all that it came up with. could of been a lot better with the story staying the same but a better funnier script and better actors.- Was this review helpful to you?
