  • A beautiful film in which nothing much happens

    [Highly rated reviewer]

If you like action, excitement, a narrative story that takes you from A to B.... don't bother. This wonderful film doesn't have a standard story / plot but is a beautifully and closely observed window into the lives of a train driver and his daughter. A quiet and spacious film in which little is spoken... but so much about the characters is shown through their interactions, expressions and the details of their lives. I saw this at the cinema with a friend. We went in without any particular expectations, both found it a gentle and moving film and left the cinema feeling that we'd really hit the jackpot. If you like intelligent, emotionally literate cinema that doesn't bash you over the head to make a point - start here.

very dull movie, slow even than a turtle. sheer wastage of time. Should be shown in film schools to explain how to bore the audience :(

I just don't get all the fuss about this languid and meandering slice of working-class French life. Low on plot, high on 'atmosphere' this is just dull dull dull. The second star is for some nice shooting. I would recommend drinking heavily (as per the title) as it may elevate the material.

Although the cinematography is quite artistic, the plot is painfully slow and nothing really happens. Far too slow and boring for me.

I am generally a fan of French art-house cinema and I loved Beau Travail by the same director, a beautifully-shot, highly evocative film in which nothing much happens. 35 Rhums was evidently aiming at the same effect, but sadly it just didn't work for me.

There's nothing wrong with a glacially slow pace, but there wasn't enough happening visually or emotionally to compensate in this film. The characters seemed quite underdeveloped and it was frustratingly difficult to grasp the relationships between some of the main characters and the back-story.

I have read elesewhere that Claire Denis was inspired by a 1949 Japanese film called Late Spring, so perhaps I'll check that out by way of comparison. In the meantime, if you fancy a gentle tale of family relationships in an urban environment, I'd recommend Michael Winterbottom's stunningly gorgeous Wonderland instead.

  • Subtitles don't work

This film is in French which would normally be fine but the subtitles don't work (regardless of whether the menu setting is on or off) which is a show stopper for non-French speakers.
