A complex story of life behind the Iron Curtain, which is difficult but potentially greatly rewarding...

Deathly dull
By a customer from Surrey, UK , 28 Jul 2008[Highly rated reviewer]
Once again all the positive reviews of this film are 'worthy'.
When you break it down to reality this is an exceedingly dull piece of filmmaking. Makes you wonder what you have to do to win these awards. . . . let's see . . . .
1. Does the film look ugly. . . . tick!
2. Is the subject matter worthy or controversial. . . . tick!
3. Is it dull as a viewing experience. . . . tick!
4. Is it subtitled. . . . . double tick for that one!
5. Are there supposedly meaningful lingering shots or interminable scenes. . . .tick, tick, tick!!!!!!
Hmmmmm, will think twice about 'award winning films' in future then!!

(130)Not easy but worth it.
By Deanomassive (7 reviews) , 22 Oct 2012An insight into a very tough 24 hours for two students in communist era Romania. Brilliant cinematography, long takes which really set the scene and almost make you feel as cold as some of the streets portrayed. Not an easy watch but definitely worth it.- Was this review helpful to you?

Underdeveloped and soporific
By a customer , 22 Oct 2012There are less characters, plot and writing in this film than in an average 30 second commercial. It's not awful and I wanted to like it, but it's unambitious and cheap and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. If you enjoy pretentious, minimalist, intellectually insignificant films about disturbing subject matter, you might enjoy it. I require a bit more substance and characters that are likeable or at least relatable to engage my interest.- Was this review helpful to you?

coat hanger blues
By kevil9 (120 reviews) from Glasgow , 20 Oct 2012If you're a drongol who thinks Eli roth and Michael Bay make great films then go back to practicing your signature with your brightly coloured crayon set, as this is way beyond your single figured IQ
The setting, the time and the subject matter look like a car-crash in the making, and what develops here is an insight behind the iron curtain. The result is better than you would imagine
No mawkish sentimentality here as we follow a character as she aids her friend in a huge personal decision which could have serious repercussions for them given the societ which they inhabit
There is no melodrama, no fusiness in the staging or direction, and the impression is of an unflinching, bleak survival. With that backdrop, it is obvious why the secondary character makes her decision
My only issue with the characterisation is that she is weak and stupid, that it begs why our main character is friends with her, especially as she makes a huge sacrifice on her behalf
But I guess that characterisation was needed to reach the end.
The end scene, and especially the last, static unspoken shot reveals so much, and implies what has changed and the future of the friendship
Yes the pace is slow, no, there are no whizz-bang editing and crappy pounding soundtrack which do nothing to serve the film
This is drama. For people with a brain. and a heart
Ignore the one star reviewers. They are, quite simply, morons- Was this review helpful to you?

Waste of life
By Tomsie (1 review) , 25 Mar 2012one of the poorest films I've seen in a really long time. The two lead female characters did not inspire me to care about what happened as they were both just annoying in their own ways. Dont even want to write a long review and waste more of my time on this. If you think any subtitled world film is artistic and powerful, and more worthy of praise then you will like this and you are fickle. If you want to engage with good characters in a film you feel involved with and attached to, this is not for you. you cant write a drama on such an emotive issue with horrendous characters. And I'm not even talking about the quality of the acting as its more or less irrelevant due to subtitles. It's just a bad film.- Was this review helpful to you?
