A calm yet humorous take on a terminal illness that steers well away from the usual cliches.

A serious laugh

50/50 is a film about a young man (Adam) who is diagnosed with cancer, and how those closest to him respond to his diagnosis. Based on writer Will Reiser's experiences with his own cancer, it perfectly balances pathos and humour. In fact, it's very funny.
Seth Rogan, who is Reisner's friend in real life, and helped him through his ordeal (including scoring medicinal cannabis and changing his dressing), plays his best friend, with the perfect comic touch you would expect.
There are some excellent performances from the supporting cast, including a pitch-perfect Angelica Houston (Mum) and Anna Kendrick (psychotherapist).
It's touching, but never mawkish, nor does it resort to gross-out humour, and should appeal to anyone who likes their laughs to be more that just comedy. Including, it seems from the Q&A, those who've been there. Praise indeed.- Was this review helpful to you?

(108)Depressing, boring but a comedy? (don't make me laugh)
By Henders (16 reviews) from West Wickham , 09 May 2013Rented this after seeing a trailer and didn't know what to expect and frankly wish I hadn't bothered. I am amazed at the number of relatively positive reviews. Maybe people don't want to be rude about a film trying to deal with such a sensitive subject, but I can't work it out. This film is dull, unfunny and just bad with a subject matter that isn't lightened. Do yourself a favour and rent something else.- Was this review helpful to you?

So glad Joesph Gordon-Levitt is in this.
By StrakerAmy (6 reviews) , 23 Feb 2013Was on a bit of an actor binge and put this on my list purely because of Joseph Gordon-Levitt's name on the cast list. Shallow, maybe, but I found him so watchable in Inception and The Dark Knight Rises that I was compelled to look him up. This is a belter of a film. Don't normally go for this type but I have recommended it to everyone I have seen since I watched it! It is wonderful. Simply. There's not a lot of characters but each are memorable and really contribute to the film. Anna Kendrick was a mini-revelation for me, she literally made me laugh out loud. There are loads of funny lines which is cleverly done considering the subject matter, not just the cancer storyline but his relationship with his mother and his mentally ill father. Loved it. Watch it.- Was this review helpful to you?

Tumour with humour
By Yvonx (5 reviews) , 10 Feb 2013A finely tuned and well acted film; strikes just the right balance between the inevitable trauma of the subject - diagnoses of cancer at an early age (in your prime) with humour despite the tumour! The intellectually-challenged sex starved best mate supplies light relief in his ham-fisted portly, 'he aint heavy he's my buddy' kind of way, while Anjelica Huston is impressive as the Mother; an all coping force to be reckoned with. Joseph Gordon-Levitt who plays Adam, the central character, does an excellent job in an understated yet convincing way. I enjoyed this film and found myself caring about his chances of making it; routing for him. If you want to know the end WATCH the film!- Was this review helpful to you?

A real gem of film binding fun, sad and love so intrinsically
By DonKuan (65 reviews) from Wokingham , 26 Jan 2013Last December, I have got my first book published on the same day as Xmas day and it was supposed to be a double celebrations until my big sister called me in the morning with a shocking news that she is diagnosed with cancer. And coincidently, I have this DVD already rented sitting in front of my TV. Until recently, I find the courage to watch this movie. I thought I couldn't stomach the movie but the whole film is so out of my expectation. I didn't only laugh a lot but also the whole film is crafted with so much warmth, friendship and sadness naturally. This film has made me think and of course shed a few tears. If you know or close to someone who suffers from cancer, it is okay to watch it. It doesn't make you feel worst after watching it. PS: normally I don't find Seth Rogen funny but he plays so naturally hilarious as a supportive friend to J. Levitt in this film.- Was this review helpful to you?
