  • Intense, but worthwhile.

This is much better than the strikingly similar US film The Tortured (2010). May be too slow paced for some, but the intensity in the performance of Claude Legault as the despairing Father seeking revenge makes the film so much more powerful and worth watching. The fact it's subtitled makes no difference.

  • Brilliantly thought-provoking

This could so easilly have slipped into a shockingly grotesque film focussing on the specific horrors of a little girl's rape and murder but in fact, this film is a measured, thought provoking work that teaches us that vengance does not always bring us the satisfaction that you might expect. the bit at the end summed it up when Bruno is asked whether he still thinks vengance is the best course of action and he says 'no.' When he's asked if he regretts his actions, he also says 'no.' It's a great film, not too much dialouge either so not too much reading for those of us who don't speak French. I would seriously recommend this; it's not as shocking as you think and it actually makes you think.

Thought provoking, the end word said it all. An excellent film on a disturbing subject, done intelligently with great acting. Not gratuitous but necessary to get the point across.

  • A Challenging and Disturbing Film

    Rated - 4.0 stars

A pretty unsettling insight into the darker recesses of the human psyche, this film deals not only with the rape and murder of an 8 year old girl, but also demonstrates to what lengths her father, an apparently otherwise mild-mannered surgeon, is prepared to go in order to punish the perpetrator. This film is definitely not for the squeamish, but it is superbly made and confronts the viewer with some extremely difficult moral dilemmas. The violence is graphic, but not gratuitous and all the more believable due to the realism of setting, circumstance and the emotional vacuum the slain girls father finds himself in. This movie took me from empathy for the father, to pity later on. I even almost felt sorry for the killer at one point, but couldn't quite manage it. This film shares an almost identical plot with 'The Tortured', however in my opinion, this is by far the better of the two. An excellent, if controversial film, well worth watching
