Controversial rapper Eminem (real name Marshall Mathers) makes his big screen debut with 8 MILE, a bracing drama directed by the increasingly audacious Curtis Hanson. Set in 1995 in the bleak, urban battle zone of Detroit, the film follows the struggles of a young man desperate to make a better life for himself. Jimmy Smith, Jr., better known as Rabbit, is destined for a life of squalor. Living in a cramped trailer with his deadbeat mom (Kim Basinger), Rabbit works in a factory to make ends meet. His only outlet is hip-hop. Possessing a talent for freestyle rapping, Rabbit still hasn't managed to unleash his true potential. But his best friend Future (Mekhi Phifer) is determined to make that happen. Future forces Rabbit to enter a freestyle battle that he blew the week before, giving him another chance at redemption. Hanson's stellar portrait of lower-class urban disillusionment, shot with uncompromisingly gritty realism by Rodrigo Prieto, proves that the issue is no longer about race, it's about money. Eminem delivers a bold performance as a troubled youngster trying to find his place in a harsh, cruel world.

Director Curtis Hanson puts a new spin on the familiar triumph against the odds genre with this slick showcase for the talents of superstar rapper Eminem. The story follows aspiring rap artist Rabbit (Eminem), who hopes to escape his bleak life in Detroit's 8 Mile district — the dividing line between the city's white suburbs and the predominantly black inner city. But, after losing his job and his (pregnant) girlfriend, he's forced to work in a soul-destroying factory and to live with his alcoholic mother (Kim Basinger) and her lover. The star's notorious misogyny and homophobia are understandably softened here — though audience credibility may be stretched by a scene in which he chides his friends for taunting a gay colleague. While it doesn't break any new ground, Hanson's film is a compellingly gritty account of growing up in poverty on Detroit's streets. But the real revelation here is Eminem, who delivers an irresistibly likeable and honest performance, albeit pretty much as himself.
Successful attempt to make a rapper into a movie star with a gritty, semi-autobiographical drama; in the process, though, Eminem has been tamed.
A massive disappointment. The cliched showbiz hopeful plot is more Showgirls than The Jazz Singer. Eminem has little chance to show any acting range as he is only asked to show mannerisms ranging from gormless to stupid looking. The wit he shows in his videos is noticeably absent. He is a rare talent in a world of slick but dull Justin Timberlake-alikes and deserves another chance on the big screen. 8 Mile fails to go the distance.

Hollywood hot property Brittany Murphy has been in talks to appear in an adaptation of D M Thomas' The White Hotel. To be written and directed by Simon Monjack, who has previously worked on Factory Girl, the film would see Murphy as a Viennese opera singer during WWI, Empire reports. The character turns to Sigmund Freud for help - a process which then reveals that she can see the future. Since her appearance in the Eminem movie 8 Mile, Brittany Murphy's roles have been prolific, with parts in... Read more
