LOVEFiLM Review 9 Songs

  • 3.5 stars out of 5

    By Tom Charity from LOVEFiLM

Michael Winterbottom may have made the most sexually explicit film ever to receive a mainstream UK release, but it's also a touchingly emotional portrait of an all-too-brief romance with an achingly hip soundtrack.

What better way to monitor the relationship between two people than through their sex life? This film does exactly that, watching the different ways the couple explore & abuse each other as their feelings are born, grow, change & in the end die. You could say the sex is another way of charting the life of the average person. The backdrop of the gigs also follows this pattern. They provide a distraction from the sex & time for the viewer to reflect on what the film is saying about the couple at that point in time. The sex is strong, graphic & real. It is most certainly not for the prudish. The film is interesting, sexy & touching in places.

A rather pointless film that tries to cobble together several nights of passion revolving around a couple attending band performances at the Brixton Academy. In all honesty it would have been better to call this film 9 Shags and just had the sex without the concert footage, which was of poor quality and became pretty tedious. The people who have mistakenly described this as porn have completely overlooked the tenderness of the sex here - this is a couple lovemaking and discovering each other. This is not porn! It is not intended to be pornographic and only people who think that sex is dirty and sinful could imagine it to be so. That said, it is graphic! Personally, I have no problem with the 'real sex' element of this movie only that it offered very little else. It documented an event that many of us would have had when we were young and carefree however I have my memories and don't really need to watch someone else's.

A poor soft porn and not so soft porn drama. Said to be the most sexually explicit film ever put on general release. Based on a rock star performing 9 songs in concert with each performance interspersed with an explicit sexual encounter with his girl friend. But it is not erotic , and the characters are not developed, there is no story, and almost no script. Don’t bother.

Graphic porn disguised as a film. No plot, character development or reason to watch. Even the live bands didn't make up for it. Fine if you want to watch porn.....

  • Sex and (prescription) drugs and rock 'n' roll....

I can't imagine anyone watching this film without having some idea what to expect but what they get is a series of droning bands and de trop sex scenes - though the ejaculation is a bit of an eye-opener. Truly a come-down from the man who made the superb 'Welcome To Sarajevo' and the interesting 'C*** and Bull Story' (which could be this film's sub-title,really.) But he has always been an erratic director and I imagine his forthcoming 'Carry On Up Raymond's Revue Bar' will also be divisive.
