This is a much misunderstood and underrated film. It is, in fact, a superbly crafted exploration by Adrian Lyne of lust versus love. While the film is incredibly life-affirming (even the simple act of changing a cassette tape becomes a beautiful moment), it also shocking as it charts the gradual disintegration of a relationship over a mere 9 and a half weeks from one of mutual trust to debasement through thee lowest of human sexual perversities.
Kim Basinger puts in a strong performance here, thankfully avoiding her normal character stereotypes. The real star of the film, however, is Mickey Rourke whos brilliantly underplayed acting reminds us of why, back in the Eighties, he was heralded as the new Brando. The pair reunited for the first time in 23 years on the red carpet at the premiere for their new movie The Informers... Read more
