[Highly rated reviewer]This is a much misunderstood and underrated film. It is, in fact, a superbly crafted exploration by Adrian Lyne of lust versus love. While the film is incredibly life-affirming (even the simple act of changing a cassette tape becomes a beautiful moment), it also shocking as it charts the gradual disintegration of a relationship over a mere 9 and a half weeks from one of mutual trust to debasement through thee lowest of human sexual perversities.
Kim Basinger puts in a strong performance here, thankfully avoiding her normal character stereotypes. The real star of the film, however, is Mickey Rourke whos brilliantly underplayed acting reminds us of why, back in the Eighties, he was heralded as the new Brando. The man really could portray so much emotion simply by a smile, look or tilt of his head that he often didnt even need to speak.
Beautifully filmed, fantastically acted, strongly themed an Eighties classic!

Remember when?By a customer from Milton Keynes , 24 Dec 2010Not many people haven't seen this by now I would think. Very 1980's, glossy and empty but watchable and at times fairly erotic. Micky Rouke looks like a before and after advertisement for hard living.
9 and half weeksBy a customer from Rickmansworth , 19 Sep 2010I saw it second time round and I liked it better. It was well acted, the nuances, the games. And you knew why she found him irresistible in the beginning, and how he made her feel free, wild and exciting, but you also understand how the power games and humiliations in the end scared her away. Quite powerful.
could have been betterBy mastarrrpoop (27 reviews) from Wandsworth , 25 Jul 2010This was a big movie was I was younger and I was prevented from watching it due to its sexual nature but after watching it for the first time recently, it was not as sexual as some recent films are these days.
The storyline was a little weak and it could have been better. All the same it held my attention as I wanted to know how it was going to end and to see what all the fuss was about all those years ago - but the ending was disappointing.
Overall it was bland and not as graphic as you would have thought it to be.
9 1/2 weeksBy lastengland (105 reviews) from Winchester , 02 Jul 2010hmmm, interesting film, only on the basis of who was John....what is in his past to make him act like he did.
glad it was one of my 'freebies'
