A good russian movie, modern day war movie on a par with 'Full Metal Jacket' and 'Platoon'. The Film is based on a true story, and follows a small group of young Russian soldiers, from the trials of initial training to their arrival in the heart of the Afganistan war zone in 1989. The action in Afganistan is not like the expected at all. It is very bloody and dirty. The 9th company is defending the hill 3234. They are hopelessly calling for help. As the battle that raged on the forgotten company who fought on, unaware the war had ended.
This is a good example of Russian Cinema, using the American 'NAM' film type, It works well, and done with a budget that would be small change to an American Film.
we've seen it all before - disparate group whipped into shape by bitter and twisted RSM, sorry Warrant Officer (?).
Doesn't matter tho - a worthy addition to the greatest war films ever made.A sense of perspective does us all good, and Afghanistan WAS Russia's Vietnam. Interesting isn't it that back then the Taliban were America's big mates but let's face it: if you've got oil or are fighting this year's enemy, that's good enough for the s**t kicking Fascist States of America.
Been said before, and said to great effect in this film: 'in all its history, no-one has EVER subjugated Afghanistan'
so why are our troups there now, and don't real reports of them look just like the spaced out grunt troops of Apocalypse Now? Or 9th Company for that matter.
If you like a war film that has something to say too this is for you
