9th Company

A good russian movie, modern day war movie on a par with 'Full Metal Jacket' and 'Platoon'. The Film is based on a true story, and follows a small group of young Russian soldiers, from the trials of initial training to their arrival in the heart of the Afganistan war zone in 1989. The action in Afganistan is not like the expected at all. It is very bloody and dirty. The 9th company is defending the hill 3234. They are hopelessly calling for help. As the battle that raged on the forgotten company who fought on, unaware the war had ended.

This is a good example of Russian Cinema, using the American 'NAM' film type, It works well, and done with a budget that would be small change to an American Film.

ok but nothing special

If this film had been made before full metal jacket, platoon and probably several other war movies I might have said it was good. It borrows heavily from these films and so feels like I've seen it all before.

Also there are some really, really cheesy moments in it that removed any hope of me being sucked into the gritty scenes.

It does highlight quite well the utter futility of war, but I don't agree that it doesn't have a Hollywood ending - the last line is 'we were victorious'!

The depiction of 'the enemy' was a bit crass - 'Muslims are not afraid to die' is a bit cliched.

Overall, it may have been good for the Russian film industry but it's a few years behind the times, and just cuts and pastes other films' storylines and themes.
