What just happened indeedBy Eyesrsore (23 reviews) from Glasgow , 22 Sep 2008
[Highly rated reviewer]I went along to see What Just Happened, which was probably the reaction of most of the audience. I've thought about it quite a bit and still don't really know what to make of it. I'm not sure at all that the makers knew what kind of film they were making. I thought the tone was all over the place, that the pacing was wildly erratic - in fact I think there's two different films in there trying to get out. I realise what they were trying to do, to make a film that shows someone with an incredibly busy life, full of stresses, trying to cope but for me it didn't work. For example, one of the first things he did was pick his two young kids, from his first wife, and take them to school. We never saw them or his first wife again. There wasn't even a reference to them in the remainder of the film.
I loved some of the scenes where he was trying to reconnect with his second wife. No spoilers, but there is a film in this alone. It just got cluttered up with ..... the clutter of the film. What was the reason for the manic scenes with Bruce Willis? He was a caricature of himself, as was the Director. The film could have done without them, it would then probably have been regarded as an 'intelligent satire ' on the film industry, instead it seems to be a film that lost it's way and ended up as drama that turned out to be a comedy or a comedy that turned out to be a drama but really is neither.

Brilliant satire on the movie industryBy twosoddingcats (269 reviews) from Kingston-upon-Thames , 24 Dec 2012Robert De Niro is a Producer who must get an English Director to change the ending of a movie or the studio boss will be very angry and loose millions of dollars (she's aware the test audience hated it). At the same time, he is persuing agent John Turturro in an attempt to get him to get his client Bruce Willis to shave off his massive beard for a new movie project as the studio won't green light it with his Captain Ahab beard. Bruce Willis sends himself up brilliantly as the over paid and pampered Hollywood star who thinks his beard gives him artistic integrity and demands the beard stays. There are nice cameos from Sean Penn, Stanley Tucci, Kristen Stewart and a cute dog.
The title says it allBy a customer , 13 Aug 2012A very boring and pointless film. When a film leaves me to fall asleep then I know there is a problem. Considering the cast, highly disappointing.
Yeah., just what DID happen?By TheWatchman (746 reviews) from Suburbia , 14 Jan 2012I love Robert DeNiro (don't most film fans?) and I generally watch whatever he's in regardless, as you know you'll get a good performance out of him. However, somehow I completely missed `Just What Happened?' when it was in the cinema (was it ever?).
It boats an impressive cast along with DeNiro, who plays a film producer who's career is on the slide. He has trouble with his actors, trouble with his ex wife and trouble with his teenage daughter. Yes, DeNiro plays it as good as he always does, it's just the story that lets it down. What should have been a slick satire about the Hollywood film industry just turns into a meandering list of places DeNiro drives to and people he meets.
There isn't much of a story. In fact, the central premise seems to be about him trying to get Bruce Willis to shave his beard off (incidentally, Bruce Willis does send himself up quite nicely). There are a few funny moments, but only a few.
Basically, you can put a great actor in a film, but if you don't give him anything to work with, he just comes across looking a bit sheepish and almost embarrassed to be in it.
I never thought I'd see the words `Straight to DVD' associated with Robert DeNiro, but I think that would explain why this one disappeared before it came.
5/5 for the impressive cast. 3/5 for what became of them.

What Just Happened? I watched another average film!By gingerspike (432 reviews) from Grimsby , 26 Dec 2011Given the actors in this film, I expected something quite special, but it was rather average really. It tells the story of two weeks in the life of a middle-aged Hollywood producer. As a satire it was okay but could have been much funnier and more hard-hitting than it actually was. Not a bad film with some laughs but I was expecting so much more.
