A feast for lovers of classic French gangster flicks - and carsBy Noseyjoe (167 reviews) from London , 10 Mar 2010
[Highly rated reviewer]Well it's only a gangster movie at the end of the day, so it will only ever consist of betrayals (real or imagined), shoot-outs, faithless molls (real or imagined), then a big shoot-out, big pile of bodies, the end. But it is a supremely stylish contribution to the genre, indeed probably a homage to Jean-Paul Belmondo and his ilk, with an inexhaustible supply of classic French cars and a gorgeous leading lady (Monica Belluci, I presume) who's a deadringer for a young Bardot. The exploding blood packs get a little wearisome (ten per person per shootout) but otherwise lovely to look at with very high production values.

Second Second WindBy Johnnyo (39 reviews) , 23 Nov 2013As a huge admirer of Melville's original I wasn't expecting much from this but Corneau is a good director and it's beautifully shot and staged. A creditable effort but nervy Auteuil is no substitute for the hard-boiled world-weary Lino Ventura.
Watch Melville's original. You can't compare these 2 filmsBy Mikski (2 reviews) , 01 Oct 2013I don't understand what was the point of making this movie. I love the actors and atmosphere, but Melville's original is a masterpiece. Why a remake? Pointless. I guess contemporary cinema has long eaten its tale... Remakes and recycling.
Film Noir EncoreBy tzec (97 reviews) , 30 Jul 2013Good typically French gangster movie, if somewhat over long. Not sure what the ex footballing walking mahogany added to things, but it all went smoother once Daniel Auteuil came on board. A good watch.
Overly longBy a customer , 09 Mar 2013Much as I love Bellucci and Auteil, and even with Cantona to admire, this was only average I am afraid. Would have been better to shorten it an hour and keep up a better pace.
