Atmospheric and absorbingBy jesuskenevil (246 reviews) from Bruton , 25 Feb 2010
[Highly rated reviewer]A tale of revenge and discovery for a mother and her child, take her into the Romanian countryside and back to her past. Amazing soundtrack, superb performances, darkly gripping.

Audacious debut by rare talentBy a customer , 28 Jul 2013I loved 'Berberian Sound Studio', Peter Strickland's follow-up to this, and so was very keen to see his debut. It did not disappoint me, and only confirmed to my mind that he is unique amongst current British film makers (and not just because he is very good). Choosing to shoot your low-budget debut in another language, in another country, was certainly audacious, but it is a triumph. It is a thriller, but much more than that, and his fascination with soundtrack, with noise and murmur, only signaled how he was to shoot his second film. Very good performances - not at all wooden, as one reviewer here claimed - and wonderful use of location, all produce a thoughtful, brooding mini-masterpiece.
A Romanian Folk TaleBy HolyMary (1 review) , 21 Nov 2012A serious and provoking folk tale set in the Carpathian Mountains of Romania. Katalin Varga is an interesting story of a woman and her son on the road, venturing into her dark and mysterious past, with a mind for revenge. Although the storyline is good I mostly rate this for its scenery, landscapes and atmospheric quality.
Romanian RevengeBy manonfireuk (401 reviews) from Liverpool , 16 Mar 2012This ain't like your average revenge movie, don't expect the victim of the tale to toughen up and roam the land kicking butt. It's a slow burner where vengeance is sought after but never really satisfied and the ending is very grim. It's a well acted, absorbing and looks great but there is something about it that doesn't really satisfy.
Out of this worldBy nadeje (4 reviews) , 03 Jan 2012Beautiful film!
Haunting, quite extraordinary..
Spectacular scenery...this film takes you somewhere very different.
Katalin is such a strong character, a woman who is determined to deliver a revenge.
