Should've been lots better, but still not too bad

The premise of this film is great, it could've been awesome and it should've been, but they miss the mark most of the way through and it drags for the first 25 minutes. I said to my better half, that we'd give it 20 minutes and if we didn't like it, we'd turn it off, and had we stuck to that idea it would've been a shame, because we'd have had to switch it off... This couldve been a great film like Morgan Freemans 10 items or less and it couldve left you thinking what if theyd never met in a Sliding Doors fashion and like 10 items or less it couldve benefitted greatly for being only an hour long and cutting out the dross, which theres a lot of
There must be something about the lead actors though, because you do find yourself drawn in by about two thirds through and thats despite the god awful plink plonk soundtrack. The problem is, we all know the film is about the carpool guy from a) the title and b) the blurb we can all read on the box from the film company, and it says he changes Joel's life through a series of conversations with the carpool guy, so that's what we're waiting for. The film takes far too long flirting with the idea of Joel needing the carpool guy before getting to the point where they actually meet, and when they do the film picks up, and there is a strength in the core group of protagonists, because by the end we really do care about Joel & the carpool guy, but all the 'bad guys' you kind of wish they'd just shut up and go away... I mean the Mother's / boss lady's scream is embarrassing to watch, and cringe-worthy (kinda like Billy Crystal crying - but theres another story). Theres a lot more I could say, but its a waste of time really, though special mention must be made of the jokes about the dead guy not smelling bad [not a spoiler!] which are lame at best and trying to flog the humour home by repeating them so often to try and convince you of 'no-really-it-is-funny' is just a bit chaff. But that was is in the first 20 minutes, and we have to forgive them for this, because all in all it's actually a not bad film, 6 out of 10 on a very, very good sunshiny day, when your other halfs cheerful, but really on most days of the week its a 4/10 couldve lived without that
Somehow though I still enjoyed it
