Frankenweenie is a delightful movie, funny and macabre, heartfelt and throwaway.

It's a graveyard smashBy blackpolekev (248 reviews) from blackpole , 09 Nov 2012
[Highly rated reviewer]This is a welcome return to form for Tim Burton after the awful Dark Shadows. It's a full length remake of Burton's 1984 short film which was shown in cinemas along with Baby Secret Of The Lost Legend way back in 1985.
This time it's in 3D, which works well in black and white as it doesn't seem as dark as colour 3D films. Here Victor Frankenstein is a young boy whose beloved pet dog Sparky is accidentally killed. It's interesting to note that the accident occurs as a result of Victor having been persuaded, against his will, to play baseball (he's not the sporty type); it just makes me wonder if Burton hated sports when he was in school. Consumed with grief, Victor gets an idea from his school science teacher and brings Sparky back to life with lightning, just like the Frankenstein monster. Sparky even has the same bolts in his neck as electrodes.
This is more serious and darker in tone than typical animated films but if you've seen Corpse Bride or The Nightmare Before Christmas you'll know what to expect. This is far better than the recent Paranorman and Hotel Transylvania which were both so disappointing.

Frankly fantasticBy mattecky (53 reviews) from durham , 16 Dec 2013This is without doubt a sublime film. Dark - yes. Macabre? Hell yes. Yet it is heartwarming, hilarious and obviously a cheeky nod at Mary Shelley's classic. Like The Fantastic Mr Fox and Wallace and Gromit this is animated via stop motion which gives a warmer and more authentic feel to the characters. There are ingenious flourishes that will delight all here. Yes this film is probably unsuitable for small children - but that is why it is a PG and not a U. This is one of the best films that I have seen of Tim Burton's and maybe one of the best I have seen this year. In fact anybody who has seen Branagh's abysmal Frankenstein adaptation will see this Burton riff on the story far, far more pleasurable! Unmissable.
If you like Tim Burton Films, then you will like this.By a customer , 22 Nov 2013Very good Tim Burton animation. A typical graveyard story similar to previous films but a little more adult. A good match of previous short films and ideas.
Pickle dilleyBy Pickledilley (5 reviews) , 19 Nov 2013Thought this was a good film, however it did make me want to cry on a number of occasions.. Haha.
Marley and Me from beyond the grave.......By LING0 (82 reviews) from Conwy , 24 Sep 2013A good Tim Burton effort. Great basic story about a boy and his dog but given the Burton gothic twist and a dose of Mary Shelly. Some parts reminded me of Edward Scissorhands but not to the point of rehashing the story. Definite Halloween watch with the kids, creepy story but not frightening and everyone loves a dog!
Burton at his bestBy a customer , 07 Sep 2013Very typical of Tim Burton - humorous, inventive and often dark. Probably a bit scary for young children, but I loved it!
