Ao, his new-found Ho' and long lost Bro': a no-no!By Maccerpacker (1 review) , 17 Aug 2012
[Highly rated reviewer]What can I say? Not good. I love anything historic that transports you back into that time. The French and English titles throw you a bit. The characters speak in Neanderthal-ese (grunts and shouts), sometimes translated by Engllsh commentators. When Neanderthal Ao appears, with his big brow, broad nose and waddling gait, it all seems a bit Doctor Who and amateur dramatics. I couldn't help wondering if they really wandered bare chested through the snow in Siberia. The polar bear seems real, but are they prehistoric animals? And the fight is a bit of an anti-climax. I get the gist of the story: Neanderthals disappeared for no clear reason and Homosapiens appeared, but there seems to be nothing more to the plot. Ao's clan is killed off by disease and murder, he walks to Southern Europe (from Siberia: I'm no geographer, but that's some journey) to try and find his long lost brother. Amazingly, he does so, but by some cruel trick of fate it appears that bro' has died (judging by his state of non-decay) some hours earlier. Anyway, Ao has picked up a pretty outcast homosapien mate on the way south, they procreate once she has come to terms with his less than attractive features and they become happy nomads. The end.

Give this 10 mins and you'll be hookedBy hookedonfilm (8 reviews) , 20 Jun 2013Really pleasantly surprised. Beautifully filmed, simple and compelling script and story line. And really good acting. After the first 10 mins I found I completely suspended any disbelief/ cynicism and really enjoyed it - for me this is definitely a 3 star
Better than averageBy cedartower (1 review) , 27 May 2013Nice cinematography. Good plot line. Ao is characterised as a nice link between nature and the beast and human spirit.
Worth a look - spread the word.By Jay-Gee (1 review) , 31 Mar 2013Originally titled AO - The Last Neanderthal this is a beautifully photographed work of art. The make up and acting are exquisite. Aruna Shields, who was once being acknowledged as the new face of Indian cinema, plays an exceptional part and shows just how far she has come with her acting from the early days. This is a gem of a film and doesn't need the subtitles or voice over to keep you engrossed. If you enjoyed Mel Gibson's Apocalypto then you will certainly enjoy this. It should have had a wider release - spread the word.
