Its light, its a bit crazy but quite a bewitching film.

More than a little tongue-in-cheek, the dialogue, which references the decadent literature of the 19th century, celebrates the sincerely superficial in the manner of a contemporary Oscar Wilde lite.

I found myself smiling inwardly throughout the film, which lifted my spirits with a discrete charm, and I was a little sad when it ended and I had to return to back to the every day world.

Managed to watch 20 minutes of this before giving up. Had to check the write up to see that it was really supposed to be a comedy. That's 20 minutes of my life I will never get back!

It is rare for me to give up on a film but I have...not very witty, acting seems a bit too forced and the story is just annoying (and has been done before in far better films!).

The quirky film is perhaps the most likely of any movie to disappear up its own posterior and there is perhaps no better example than ‘Damsels in Distress’, a film that is just – why? what? and how? combined. Set in Seven Oaks Campus is tells the story of a group of preppy girls who take it upon themselves to prevent suicides in campus. Sounds like a dark subject matter, but it is played like ‘Clueless’ without the laughs. There are quirks and bizarre moments all over the place and these are delivered by writer/director Whit Stillman. The problem with ‘Damsels’ is that it does not really appeal to anyone. As a comedy it is so arch that only a person with a very wry sense of humour will get the film. As a drama, it is disjointed and unbelievable as none of the characters or situations they find themselves in feel real. It is pretention on celluloid. The strange juddering narrative is just another device that Stillman uses to alienate the viewer from the already alienating experience. Was he deliberately trying to make you not care about anything in the film? Casting wise, ‘Damsels’ is a mixed bag. Only Greta Gerwig and Adam Brody as the two ‘leads’ seem to fit the tone of the piece and come out unscathed. Megalyn Echikunwoke as the ‘British’ student is just odd and the ‘normal’ Lily is boring. There feels like a barrier between the viewer and the cold characters that is thicker than just a TV screen. Emotionless and unfunny, ‘Damsels in Distress’ is a film that infuriates and bores in equal measure.
