Okay! This is a film about gay rights in post-war Serbia and it's not a pleasant sight, but what could have turned into a miserable and depressing film has been turned into a comedy. Therein lies the small problem for me. I did enjoy the film a great deal. The comedy was funny and there are some great lines, particularly from the Serbian gangster's girlfriend, but it's such a serious subject and the two things don't sit side by side that well. My feeling is that it should really have been one film or the other and as the comedy shines through, then they should have stuck with that. Don't be put off by this though. The performances - in the main - are strong, the script is sharp enough and the characterisation (while a little stereotyped in places) is fine. Serbia is not a good place to be gay, even in 2013 and this comes through, but that should be another completely different film as there are some stories to be told there. In the meanwhile, enjoy this for what it is. We did.
