intolerable crueltyBy Seadragon (7 reviews) from Saffron Walden , 04 Nov 2004
[Highly rated reviewer]Imagine being sent to prison for over 20 years for stealing $5. Sounds like something from the convict days, doesn't it.. Now imagine spending 4 years in the dark, in solitary confinement...
This is the story of Henry Young, who suffered just such a fate, and of the young, idealistic, public defender who is given his case. Christian Slater and Kevin Bacon shine bright, with brilliant performances and blatant passion for the story. Gary Oldman is, as always, outstanding in his supporting role as the Assistant Warden of Alcatraz.
Brilliant courtroom sequences, thoroughly engaging performances and a strong sense of justice. See it, if only to see Kevin Bacon getting incredible distance from his 'pretty-boy roles'...

Christian Slater-good, Kevin Bacon-greatBy StrakerAmy (6 reviews) , 22 Feb 2013Actually rented this film because Gary Oldman was in it, didn't even read the plot, just clicked away on impulse, really glad I did, and at times forgot Gary Oldman was in it. (Slight exaggeration, I love Gary and he's ace in this, as expected, but of course the majority of screen time was with the others and they were gosh-darned good!) Kevin Bacon's character really got under my skin, sort of disliking his awkward mannerisms, almost to the point where he was difficult to watch but was also completely drawn to his story. Christian Slater's enthusiastic newbie lawyer hooked me onto Henry's side, got me rooting for him even though he's not exactly your typical hero/victim. Yep. Liked it.
Well worth a watch, great movieBy a customer , 15 Nov 2012Fabulous movie. Saw it many years ago and rented it again. The acting is amazing, not a Kevin Bacon fan but in this movie he excels. Christian Slater and Gary Altman are really good in it also. Well worth a watch.
amazingly moving filmBy cheesekake (1495 reviews) from uk , 11 Mar 2012brilliant and amazing film, very moving and quite horrific.
Bacon is definitely at his best in this film
Shawshank what?By NESlami (18 reviews) from Leeds , 02 Dec 2011Possibly the greatest prison movie. It is at least up there with Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile and The Hole (Le Trou). Kevin Bacon and Christian Slater at their best. Gary Oldman is even overshadowed by their performaces, playing the classic overzealous warden. Even if the film is not historically accurate it is emotionally engaging with excellent relationship development throughout the film.
If you enjoy watching any kind of drama or prison/trial movies you should watch this. No excuses.
Worth a watch!By Steph28 (2 reviews) , 01 Aug 2011I really enjoyed this film, mostly because I thought it was a true story whilst I was watching it.. I've read up about it online today and it seems most of the story is not true. No 'dungeons' and Henri Young was reported to have been a violent criminal, not an orphan and had far better digs than we are led to believe and was in solitary for a far shorter time than three years. Never mind... Kevin Bacon was fantastic - quite a contrast to any other role I have seen him play, and it was refreshing to see Christain Slater not ripping off Jack Nicholson for a change. This was the two of them at their best in my opinion. Best to see movie with no expectations that this is anywhere close to the true story, but a believable and interesting story nevertheless.
