DON'T PASS THIS ONE BY!By a customer from Central Scotland , 08 May 2005
[Highly rated reviewer]I watched this series when the BBC first produced it. It is set at the beginning of the twentieth century up until just after the first world war. Its mix of drama and some comedy is marvellous and if you enjoy period dramas I think you'll love this one.

Dont Miss This OneBy sheite (5 reviews) , 09 Dec 2011I think this one of the best adaptations of its type the story is brilliant and I loved the slow pace of the film which relies on the strength of the story.
Bit dullBy a customer from Harrogate , 17 Jan 2011Probably fine when it came out but very slow and wooden, feel very contrived by more modern standards...we didn't even finish the disc (how shallow are we?!)
Very disappointingBy a customer from Right next door to the area it's set in! , 30 Jul 2010Oh dear, we don't seem in step with most! We found this a very plodding adaptation of a brilliant story by Delderfield, with wooden characters and no tension at all for the 'dramatic' scenes. Havers is his usual self, no surprise there, but the rest of the cast looked as if they were only doing it to pay the rent! Having sat through the first two discs we have now cancelled the remainder.
Dated but high qualityBy a customer from Newport , 09 Nov 2009A good series, but only 2 episodes per disc means that it will be weeks before we've seen the whole thing. I would have thought that it could have fitted onto 3 or 4 discs rather than 6.
of course it has datedBy jeffster (130 reviews) from Newark , 09 Nov 2009however I still enjoyed it. Never seen Nigel Havers looking so young!!!
