Bette Midler at her bestBy a customer from London, England , 25 Apr 2007
[Highly rated reviewer]I'd heard from other people that Gypsy was one of their favourite musicals so I knew I had to see it being a sucker for a good song and dance. It didn't disappoint me at all. If you wanna see a funny, sad, dramatic and slightly bawdy movie than I'm sure you'll enjoy Gypsy. Its not pretending to be something it isnt, so I would say if your not a musical lover I'd avoid it - If you are... its a cracker.

THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS Show review anywayHideI wanted to see this film about the life of Gypsy Rose Lee and I am glad I saw it but vaguely remember watching it on TV.
Good light hearted entertainment.
Go get this one!By ash53 (53 reviews) from newbury , 14 Apr 2011Big brave Bette takes on Rosalind Russel! And what a performance. It's all out there, the push, the shove. the drive. the twarted ambition but unlike the original Ms Midler brings out the darker side of a 'stage mother'. You just know that under all the big noise and bluster is somebody hurt, damaged, beyond repair and doomed to get worse.
That said - what a romp through some well known numbers and the seedy back stage of burlesque theatre.
Probably not going to be on your wish list if you're not a musical fan - probably not going to be on it if you're not a Bette Midler fan either.

ITS A HITBy will small from Hull , 04 Sep 2007This is a great musical from start to end, midler puts in a performance fit for the stage, and it would have been great if some of the others did the same. The strong supprting cast, including her daughter louise are certainly the highlights the only low points to the film is Herbie, as much as the talented Peter Riegert does his best, his vocals just miss it.
All in all a great film tho.
Still a Great FilmBy a customer from Cheshire england , 26 May 2007I really enjoyed thisversion of the film 'Gypsy'. I also enjoyed the original adaptation with Rosalind Russell. The story is still the same the artists different but still excellently portrayed. Bette Midler taking on the role of over pushy mother the part Rosalind Russel played in the original film, Bette played it with cringe making authority. Cynthia Gibb played the legendary Gypsy Rose Lea with sensitivity and grace. Julle Styne and Stephen Sondheim's score is always worth seeing and listening to. A very good film
