CAN Stop The Music!!By Renee Bishop from Newport, South Wales , 21 Apr 2005
[Highly rated reviewer]I was really looking forward to revisiting this film. I loved The Village People, and enjoyed the film when I first saw it (well I was only 8!!).
Unfortunately, it does not stand the test of time.
The film focuses on the character Sam (the woman who finds the guys and gets them a deal) but it would of been a better film it the focus was more towards the band members.
Steve Guttenberg (who plays the guy who wrote the hits) is given little to do except bop round like a maniac and there are alot of additional character who do little for the already sketchy plot.
The only reason I have given this 2 stars is for the feelgood songs, these guys could really sing!
If you liked the band then watch it for the music. If you didn't like them, avoid like the plague!!

a good feeling movie - well worth watchingBy Pungwe (4 reviews) , 15 Nov 2013I love musicals and this is one of my favourites. The 80's were a good time for life, music and musicals. It is good to see a movie which makes one feel good and believe that good things can happen to people and this movie does that. It picks you up when you are down.
All done in the best possible taste, but not for me.By number1son (51 reviews) , 08 Oct 2013Even though it has been on tv several times over I've never seen this film before, and after watching it feel it is no great loss..what a load of rubbish, all gliz and glamour, far too much talking, farcical storyline, was never a fan of village people, but you can tell why this film was created around this popoular group at that time, but it isn't one for me,but glad I finally saw it all the same.
Can stop a careerBy blackpolekev (248 reviews) from blackpole , 16 May 2013At the start of the 1980s this exploded on cinema screens in a blaze of publicity and hype. It claimed it would set the standard (and by that they meant an impossibly high standard) for all music films that were to follow and project the Village People as the next Big Thing. If only they had known just how wrong they were they could have saved $20m, which was a heck of a lot of money 33 years ago. It wasn't just an almighty flop, it was a disaster. The script is as limp as the Village People's wrists, the attempts at humour are woeful, Valerie Perrine has no comic talent whatsoever, and the only nice thing I can say about it is the songs are not bad.
Village People did have some classic disco hits such as YMCA and In The Navy (which was mercilessly parodied by Billy Connolly) but the group didn't last long. The director Nancy Walker's film making career was even shorter. This was her first film. It was also her last. I can't say I'm surprised. Apparently she went back to acting in TV sitcoms until her death.

"Fame, Fortune, Platinum Records... It's Every Boy's Dream"By a customer , 12 Oct 2012'Can't Stop the Music' is one of those films; you either love, or hate.....
I thought it was great, but I have to admit, I did watch it with my tongue placed firmly in my cheek !!!
The acting (if that is the word) is laughable and the storyline almost non existent.....
But on the whole, 'Can't Stop the Music' was enjoyable, on a very wet, windy day.
All good funBy Scandal (2 reviews) , 30 Sep 2012If you're looking for a serious film then this is not for you. It works best if you just go with the flow. Yes the plot is a little thin and Steve Guttenberg seems to be in the wrong film but it looks amazing. The songs are great and choreography is fantastic. You can tell Arelene Phillips had something to do with this film - lots and lots of scantily clad men. This film has the best music video for YMCA that I've ever seen!!!
