[Highly rated reviewer]Dont be expecting lush style here as Cassavetes instead concentrates his efforts on the raw depiction of a couple who are trying to cope with the mental breakdown of the Mother (Rowlands). Difficult to watch in places due to the quality and accuracy of the performances, this is unsurpassed on this level. Whilst it doesnt have everything, it accomplishes everything it sets out to do with scant regard for commercial selling points, and for this all involved deserve merit and a wider audience

Dinner party but keep the taxi waitingBy RobTrinidad (1 review) , 22 Aug 2013Brilliantly acted, brilliantly directed, but one hell of a grueling ride. A slice of gritty 70's drama by the great John Cassavantes
Substance over style (and rightly so)By CarolineC (18 reviews) from Gidea Park , 21 Jul 2011Very uncomfortable in places to watch, but Rowlands and Falk turn out fantastic performances. There are points where the film does seem too long, and the style and direction isn't really anything to write home about, but you can tell from the off that this is basically a character driven film and for that it is fantastic. I still find myself thinking about it.
Switched it off...By gingerspike (432 reviews) from Grimsby , 09 Mar 2011I truly thought I would really enjoy this film but felt that I had seen enough after half an hour, knowing that there was another one and a half hours or so to go. It does sound a very interesting character study but I found it to be quite boring.
a woman under the influenceBy buffyrules (368 reviews) from southend on sea , 21 Feb 2011oh she was very very good, but the film was a little too vague and minimal for my liking and didn't give too much for the viewer to take a hold of and run with. she was fantastic though so if you are up for watching an amazing performance of someone being totally doooo lally, then please give this one a watch!
worth watching, but a bit uncomfortable to watchBy sherriffflood (45 reviews) from Reading , 16 Feb 2010I enjoyed watching it, but I always find 'mental health' issues uncomfortable, and the acting was so good, I almost had to turn the dvd player off! Peter Falk is very underated in my view, and the children were good. The leading actress was also very impressive. Makes you think how difficult it is for families with these issues. Anyway, it's a good film!
